Horizon3 Achieves $2 Billion Valuation Amid Growing Cybersecurity Needs
Cybersecurity startup Horizon3 has recently raised a $250 million Series E funding round, bringing its valuation to $2 billion—more than triple its value within just 14 months. The San Francisco-based company secured support from returning investors, including NightDragon and NEA.
A Rising Demand for Cybersecurity Solutions
This funding boost comes at a critical juncture, as two major AI research labs disclosed breaches to external systems that were not within their intended scope last week. Horizon3 has invested six years developing AI specifically tailored for assessing network vulnerabilities in a controlled environment. The firm is experiencing an uptick in demand from enterprises eager to stress-test their defenses, especially as AI-driven attacks become increasingly prevalent. Notably, traditional security vendors have left significant gaps in the market.
Innovative Solutions with NodeZero
Matt Hartley, Horizon3’s Chief Revenue Officer, highlighted that the company’s NodeZero platform possesses two distinct advantages: it can test live systems without disrupting ongoing operations—a challenge that other AI tools have struggled to meet—and it conducts continuous scans of entire infrastructures rather than the limited yearly assessments that are commonplace in the industry. This comprehensive scanning covers the full network, unlike traditional methods that often only assess 2-3% of the total.
Accelerating Growth and Revenue
With nearly $100 million in annual recurring revenue last year, Horizon3 experienced an impressive 120% year-over-year growth and anticipates further acceleration this year. As AI tools have simplified the process for attackers to develop new exploits, security teams are under immense pressure to handle threats more swiftly than they can address weaknesses. Hartley noted that Horizon3 has dedicated roughly $100 million to research and development aimed at creating automated systems that remain predictable and manageable.
Addressing New AI Risks
The increasing scrutiny on AI deployment is evident in the questions organizations pose regarding AI detection and security. Hartley mentioned that many organizations that hastily integrated AI are now reconsidering the potential ramifications. The emphasis on consistent and predictable testing has become more pronounced as companies strive to fortify defenses against real-world threats. Horizon3 has performed 310,000 production security tests with zero disruptions, establishing what they term as ‘AI Hackers’, enabling fully autonomous penetration testing.
Competitive Landscape and Market Need
Hartley suggested that the true competition isn’t necessarily other software vendors but rather the traditional model of hiring human security firms for annual assessments. Although this model will likely remain, clients are increasingly interested in more frequent, comprehensive scans to ensure ongoing safety and security improvements.
Founders with a Mission
The founders of Horizon3, Snehal Antani and Anthony Pelletier, originally met during their time at Joint Special Operations Command, where they recognized the challenges posed by resource constraints in continuous security testing. Their goal in founding Horizon3 was to automate these repetitive assessments effectively and efficiently.
International Expansion and Strategic Investors
With the recent funding, Horizon3 plans to expand its international presence, opening new offices in Amsterdam in June 2026, Australia, and Singapore, while also establishing a partner network and continuing substantial investments in R&D. New strategic investors now include Singapore’s EDBI, defense contractor SAIC, and Qualcomm, indicating a broad acknowledgment of the universal nature of vulnerabilities they are addressing.
A Broad Customer Base and Market Potential
Horizon3 currently serves between 7,200 and 7,300 customers, ranging from managed service providers for small businesses to Fortune 10 enterprises. The company has identified an addressable market worth tens of billions of dollars, echoing industry estimates that project the broader cybersecurity market will grow from $271.9 billion in 2025 to a staggering $663.2 billion by 2033, according to Grand View Research.
