SpaceX’s Upcoming Launch: A Turning Point in the Satellite Race

SpaceX is on the brink of a significant milestone in its mission to expand its Starlink constellation. Today, the company is set to launch its inaugural batch of Starlink V3 satellites, which come equipped with crucial upgrades aimed at enhancing its internet service. This pivotal mission will not only see the deployment of 26 satellites but also marks a historic attempt to deploy the Starship into Earth orbit for the first time. As excitement builds around this launch, eyes are also keenly focused on Amazon, which is facing considerable setbacks in its own satellite deployment plans.

Amazon’s Challenges with its Leo Project

Amazon has hit a rough patch in its efforts to roll out its low Earth orbit (Leo) satellites. Following a successful launch on July 2, where 29 Leo satellites reached orbit aboard a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V rocket, the company has found itself stagnant. Currently, Amazon has deployed a total of 396 Leo satellites, a stark contrast to the over 11,000 Starlink satellites that are actively operational. In the short span since Amazon’s last launch, SpaceX has added 552 Starlink satellites, further widening the gap between the two companies.

Reasons Behind Amazon’s Setback

Numerous issues with Amazon’s launch partners have contributed to these setbacks. The company has primarily relied on the ULA’s Atlas V rocket, which is being replaced by the Vulcan rocket. Unfortunately, Vulcan has been grounded since February 2026 due to ongoing investigations into a booster anomaly. Moreover, Blue Origin, a space venture backed by Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos, is expected to launch Leo satellites using its New Glenn rocket. However, this rocket has also been sidelined following the destruction of its launchpad in May.

The Future of Amazon’s Leo Constellation

Given the current situation, many wonder when Amazon will next advance its Leo constellation. The initiative is still in its infancy, yet it has already encountered delays. Though Amazon received an extension from the FCC to launch half of its proposed 3,232 satellites, the company is under pressure to expedite its progress. Although Amazon asserts that the nearly 400 satellites currently in operation are sufficient to initiate a limited version of its internet service, the passing of its mid-2026 deadline for commercial availability raises concerns. Without significant progress soon, it could take years for Amazon’s Leo service to truly present a viable challenge to Starlink on a global scale.

The implications of SpaceX’s mission extend far beyond its technical achievements. As the battle for satellite-based internet heats up, the strain highlighted in Amazon’s deployment strategy underscores the fierce competition currently at play in the aerospace industry.
