US Rare Earths Supply Chains Transitioning Amid Increased Domestic Demand
In a significant shift for the rare earths market, a prominent US technology and industrial company has entered into a deal with MP Materials (MP) during the first quarter of 2026. This agreement aligns with ongoing efforts to bolster domestic supply chains while simultaneously navigating the complex global landscape.
Shifts in Sales Dynamics
Just a year ago, MP’s sales were heavily reliant on China’s Shenghe Resources. However, due to strategic alignments with the US government, MP has ceased these transactions and is now exploring new partnerships. The company aims to produce its own magnets at scale, a process that entails converting mined rare earth materials into usable oxides for magnets.
Strategic Partnerships with Industry Giants
MP has secured agreements with major players like General Motors and Apple, which is expected to enhance their market position significantly. In May, MP announced plans to commence shipments of finished magnets to GM within the year. This move not only supports their business vision but also contributes to broader US manufacturing initiatives.
Emerging Competitors in the Rare Earths Sector
Another major player, Energy Fuels, recently received $725 million in conditional government funding aimed at scaling up their rare earth production capabilities. CEO Ross Bhappu mentioned that they expect to send oxides to South Korea shortly, reflecting a growing trend for US firms to expand their reach into Asian markets.
Energy Fuels is actively pursuing acquisitions, including Australian Strategic Materials, which has a rare earths metal-making facility in South Korea. In addition, the company announced a $1.9 billion acquisition of German magnet manufacturer Vacuumschmelze (VAC), further integrating their products into VAC’s US operations.
The Global Landscape of Rare Earth Production
China currently dominates the global market for neodymium iron boron magnets, producing over 85% of global supply. Japan and South Korea follow, producing 10,000-15,000 tonnes and 2,000-3,000 tonnes per year, respectively. The US, by contrast, contributes less than 1,000 tonnes annually, highlighting the importance of domestic initiatives like those from MP and Energy Fuels.
Government Support and Future Prospects
Phoenix, a company that secured $500 million in conditional funding from the US government, emphasized that this financial backing will facilitate a significant scale-up in both metal and oxide production. This step is viewed as critical for enhancing the overall market landscape and fostering competition.
MP’s recent financial performance has improved due to the backing of US government deals, which guarantee minimum pricing for some products, cushioning against market fluctuations.
As the rare earths sector continues to evolve, the focus on domestic production signifies an important turning point. The coming years will likely see increased collaboration between US companies and a push towards more sustainable and independent supply chains.
