New Campuses to Accommodate Thousands

On Thursday, Uber announced plans to establish two new campuses in Bengaluru and Hyderabad, aiming to accommodate approximately 9,600 employees by the end of 2027. This expansion will complement Uber’s existing operations in these cities, which are pivotal hubs for software and engineering talent in India.

Partnership with Adani Group

In addition to its campus expansion, Uber has partnered with the Indian conglomerate Adani Group to construct its first data center in India. This facility is expected to be operational by the fourth quarter of 2026. These announcements were made during Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s recent visit to India, highlighting the company’s commitment to strengthening its technological infrastructure in the region.

Employment Growth and AI Investments

Currently, Uber employs around 3,500 individuals in India and plans to expand its workforce as it increases its investments in artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced technologies. The company is actively recruiting talent in areas such as generative AI, machine learning, and autonomous vehicle operations, among others.

India as a Crucial Tech Hub

India has emerged as a vital base for engineering and product development due to its large pool of software talent. For Uber, this expansion isn’t just about ride-hailing services; it’s part of a broader strategy to invest in AI, automation, and autonomous vehicle technologies. Earlier this year, Uber allocated $330 million to enhance its operations in the Indian market.

Challenges in the Ride-Hailing Market

Despite the promising opportunities, India presents obstacles for ride-hailing companies. Intense price competition, supply shortages, and high driver incentive costs pose significant challenges. Moreover, fluctuating regulations have disrupted services in various cities. Uber is also contending with local rivals such as Rapido, which has recently surpassed Ola as a formidable competitor in the region, according to Khosrowshahi.

Looking Forward

Nonetheless, Uber appears optimistic about its future in India, viewing it as a critical engineering and infrastructure hub for global operations. As the demand for skilled AI professionals and computational capacity continues to grow, the company is well-positioned to leverage India’s resources.
