Broadcom Faces Uphill Battle to Regain Trust Among VMware Users

In recent discussions, industry experts have weighed in on Broadcom’s relationship with VMware following significant management shifts since the acquisition. Concerns over trust have surfaced, especially among small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) that are considering their options amid these changes. “Broadcom has burned all the bridges. While it may be easier to migrate to whatever this new [vSphere] Standard release is from vSphere 8, they have already shown both customers and [channel] partners they can’t be trusted,” a source indicated in an interview with Ars Technica.

Shifting Sentiments in the Community

Online feedback reflects a growing discontent among VMware users. A Reddit user, dubbed bakonpie, articulately summarized this sentiment: “Too little, too late. We’ve moved on.” This viewpoint underscores a significant hurdle for Broadcom as they aim to reassess their standing with existing and potential customers.

Broadcom’s recent emphasis on appealing to SMBs comes at a crucial time when VMware’s competitors are actively courting dissatisfied customers. Notable alternatives like Nutanix, Proxmox, and Microsoft Hyper-V are capturing the attention of former VMware users. According to Sumit Bhatia, the co-author of the book *Navigating VMware Turmoil in the Broadcom Era*, “An updated vSphere Standard signals Broadcom heard the market, but three years of neglect, quote refusals, and VCF-only sales tactics have already pushed many SMBs toward alternative solutions.”

Restoring Trust Through Commitment

Experts believe that credibility, rather than just new features, is critical for Broadcom to regain the confidence of SMBs. Bhatia emphasized that Broadcom must demonstrate a sustained commitment with “stable pricing, reliable renewals, and real investment” before VMware’s offerings can be seen as a viable option for SMBs once more.

Bhatia further outlined the essential features that a vSphere Standard update would need to encompass. He noted the importance of “predictable, published pricing with no surprise renewal spikes; a genuine capped-term or perpetual-style license option; core features like vMotion and vSphere High Availability without upsell gates; and simplified per-socket licensing instead of per-core minimums.” Each of these factors could help reset SMBs’ perceptions of the VMware ecosystem.

Financial Performance Amidst Turmoil

Despite these challenges, Broadcom’s software segment has shown resilience. The company reported $8.75 billion in revenue, marking a 29 percent year-over-year growth in fiscal Q3 2026. This performance indicates that while there are hurdles to overcome, Broadcom’s overall strategy may still focus heavily on larger enterprises.

If Broadcom is willing to invest effort into making the vSphere Standard offering more accessible and appealing, it could potentially retain a segment of the market that is contemplating migration. The ultimate question remains whether Broadcom can convincingly demonstrate that its services are not just temporary solutions but a long-term partnership for SMBs looking for stability in their IT infrastructure.
