Samsung Showcases Cutting-Edge Memory and Storage Innovations at FMS 2026

Samsung has made headlines by presenting a remarkable assortment of memory and storage technologies at the Future of Memory and Storage (FMS) 2026 event held in Santa Clara, California. This event comes 13 years after Samsung introduced the groundbreaking V-NAND technology, and they continue to lead the charge with their latest advancements.

Introducing V10 of BV-NAND

At the forefront of Samsung’s display is the announcement of V10 of BV-NAND (Bonded V-NAND). This innovative flash memory boasts over 400 layers, making it a significant advancement in memory density. Thanks to Samsung’s sophisticated bonding technology, V10 achieves approximately 58% more density than the previously released V9. This higher layer count translates into enhanced read, write, and I/O performance, alongside improved power efficiency.

High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) Innovations

Continuing with their strong focus on high-performance memory, Samsung recently began shipping samples of HBM4E to customers and showcased HBM5, which is poised to become the next industry standard for High Bandwidth Memory. Furthermore, Samsung introduced a proprietary solution known as zHBM, which promises approximately eight times the performance of HBM5. This innovative technology leverages Samsung’s expertise in wafer bonding, achieving 10 times the memory density of HBM5 while tripling energy efficiency.

zHBM is designed to stack on top of AI accelerators for higher speed and efficiency

The architectural design of zHBM is particularly noteworthy as it is meant to be stacked on top of AI accelerators, significantly reducing the distance data signals must travel. This innovation enables enhanced speeds and superior energy efficiency, making it a game changer for AI applications.

Next-Gen Flash Memory: zNAND-O

In addition to BV-NAND and HBM innovations, Samsung unveiled zNAND-O, a next-generation flash memory based on its V-NAND technology. With 4 and 8 layer versions under development, zNAND-O promises remarkable space efficiency, reduced latency, and improved I/O performance compared to standard NAND storage. Targeted mainly at edge AI applications, it complements zHBM, which is aimed at AI training and inference in cloud environments.

Revolutionary LPDDR5X-PIM RAM

Samsung has also introduced the industry’s first LPDDR RAM with Processing-In-Memory (PIM) technology. This innovative approach allows data processing to occur within the memory itself before results are sent to the main processor, significantly boosting both bandwidth and power efficiency.

Keynote on AI Innovations

The event’s opening keynote, titled “Driving the Wave of AI Revolution: 3D Innovations in Memory & Storage Architecture,” was presented by prominent Samsung executives, Jin-Yub Lee and Kyungryun Kim. Their insights focus on maximizing AI system performance and improving power efficiency through cutting-edge memory and storage solutions.
