Qualcomm Explores Partnership with Samsung for 2nm Process Technology
A couple of weeks ago, speculation arose regarding Qualcomm’s ongoing discussions with Samsung about leveraging Samsung Foundry’s 2nm process node for the production of their latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chips. However, it has been confirmed that these chips are being manufactured by TSMC, which has been the primary partner for many of Qualcomm’s high-end Snapdragon processors.
Qualcomm’s Commitments to Samsung’s 2nm Technology
In a recent report, Chris Patrick, Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President and Head of Mobile Handsets, shed light on the situation. He stated that Qualcomm is conducting “in-depth work regarding Samsung’s 2nm process technology.” This strategic exploration highlights a “close partnership” that Qualcomm has been nurturing with Samsung, indicating that this relationship may soon rival its established alliance with TSMC.
Patrick emphasized that Samsung Foundry is a “long-standing core partner of Qualcomm,” and reaffirmed the importance of this partnership for future collaborative endeavors. He also noted that Qualcomm is in the process of “understanding and evaluating” how they could effectively utilize Samsung’s 2nm technology in upcoming products.
Strengthening Ties with Samsung Electronics
Moreover, Patrick praised Qualcomm’s relationship with Samsung Electronics, the manufacturer behind popular Galaxy smartphones, labeling it as Qualcomm’s “strongest partner globally” in the mobile sector. The alliance between the two companies has been built over decades, and it continues to flourish in various technological arenas.
One noteworthy collaboration includes their joint efforts toward the commercialization of LPDDR6 memory. The introduction of this innovative memory technology involves the collective expertise of engineering teams from both Qualcomm and Samsung, addressing the complexities and challenges that come with such advanced advancements.
As Qualcomm continues to navigate its partnerships and technology explorations, the prospect of integrating Samsung’s 2nm process technology into future products underscores the evolving dynamics in the semiconductor industry.
