Baidu Tests Autonomous Vehicles in London’s Growing Robotaxi Market
Chinese tech giant Baidu has officially begun testing its autonomous vehicles in London, marking a significant step in its partnership with Lyft and Freenow, the German taxi and multi-mobility app recently acquired by Lyft. This move aligns with Baidu’s broader strategy to roll out advanced self-driving technology in key European markets, enhancing the competitive landscape ahead of upcoming commercial robotaxi deployments.
A Strategic Partnership for Innovation
The testing initiative commenced on a Tuesday with the presence of human safety operators in the vehicles, approximately a year after Baidu and Lyft established a strategic partnership aimed at deploying Baidu’s Apollo Go RT6 robotaxi across Europe. This partnership allows Baidu to leverage Lyft’s platform, providing a unique opportunity for innovation in the transportation sector.
The future of the robotaxi service looks promising, especially since the vehicles will also be available through Freenow, which Lyft acquired for about $197 million in 2025. This acquisition has given Lyft a strategic footing in Europe’s ride-hailing industry, where fierce competition is unfolding among various well-funded enterprises aiming to be the first to market with fully autonomous vehicles.
London: The Heart of Robotaxi Testing
London is emerging as a pivotal battleground for autonomous vehicle testing in Europe. Earlier this year, Waymo commenced its own testing of autonomous cars with human safety operators in the city. Similar to Lyft, Uber, in collaboration with its self-driving partner Wayve, has also outlined plans to introduce a robotaxi service in London within the year. Customers can currently express interest and sign up on a mailing list; this initial service will feature human operators before transitioning to fully autonomous operations.
Looking Towards the Future
Baidu and Freenow by Lyft have set an ambitious target to allow the public to hail their robotaxis as early as 2027. However, the launch of their services remains contingent upon regulatory approval from local authorities. Currently, dozens of test vehicles are operational within London’s borough of Brent, where Lyft and Freenow are actively engaging with safety and city officials, including Transport for London (TfL) and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles (CCAV).
The UK government has been making strides toward creating a regulatory framework for autonomous vehicles, having opened applications in May 2023 for companies interested in joining an AV pilot program that enables testing under governmental oversight.
A Hybrid Approach to Ride-Hailing
When the Freenow by Lyft service officially launches, it will adopt a hybrid operational model, similar to strategies employed by competitors like Uber. This means that traditional human drivers will work in tandem with the emerging robotaxi fleet, ensuring a seamless transportation experience for users.
“As a platform with deep roots in the taxi industry, our priority is ensuring that autonomous technology supports the professional drivers who keep London moving,” emphasized Thomas Zimmermann, CEO of Freenow by Lyft, highlighting the importance of integrating autonomous solutions with existing human-led services.
