Like many individuals, I have a complicated relationship with the Memories feature on my iPhone. This AI-driven tool curates nostalgia by presenting photos and slideshows from my library, sometimes evoking joy from a day at the beach or dredging up memories of an old flame. Intriguingly, about once a month, my iPhone reminds me of the time my phone was stolen.

Transforming Your Camera Roll into Family HistoryPractical Steps to Preserve Your Best Memories

The Memory created is a fragmented concept—an auto-generated slideshow that mixes my initial years in New York. Sadly, because my phone was taken, this collection consists of misidentified JPEGs and grainy images saved from Facebook, all haphazardly imported from my hard drive, and set to sentimental music.

Initially, I felt frustration over not backing up my cherished photos properly. In retrospect, I wish I had printed the iconic ones and kept them in a box; such artifacts can last through generations.

There’s a strong case for all of us to start printing our photos. The options extend beyond mere photographic prints; it’s simpler than ever to transform the vast digital collections in our pockets into tangible forms like albums, books, and frames. Being able to hold individual prints conveys narratives like nothing on a screen can. Real photographs become embodied memories that we can discover casually in our everyday lives, unlike those propelled by an algorithm’s push notifications.

“Printing photos in any form, whether for display or touch, necessitates effort,” says Brianna Marshall, Dean of the Steely Library at Northern Kentucky University. “It compels us to engage with our memories in more meaningful ways than passively scrolling our photo roll.”

Ironically, I owe a debt of gratitude to that phone thief. The loss of numerous photos prompted me to rethink how I manage my newer shots, which I now properly back up in the cloud. I’ve created several photo books and albums for significant life events, like my wedding. There’s a box of prints that deserve company.

With young children who consistently do adorable things daily, my camera roll is expanding. Yet, my wall space remains minimalist. I recognize the imperative of printing even more photos—a responsibility that extends to you, as well. Embracing the ritual of curating and printing our photos allows for meaningful preservation of memories and fosters interaction with them for years or even decades. This process is far more fulfilling than merely taking countless photos and occasionally uploading select ones to platforms like Instagram.

Transforming Your Camera Roll into Family History

There’s something enchanting about perusing a family photo album. My mother has passionately created them for decades, and whenever I return home, I can’t resist pulling one off the shelf. Each page serves as a curated narrative of a moment — be it a dance recital, a vacation, or a festive gathering — collectively depicting our lives during that phase. She has preserved albums of her childhood and has begun some for my children as well, crafting a rich family history to reflect upon together.

While Apple, Google, and other tech institutions have made attempts, the feelings evoked by a physical album are irreplaceable. Digital backup has its merits, offering accessibility and rapid sharing options, but cloud storage can compromise image quality. Moreover, tech firms could alter their terms of service or halt operations, leaving users vulnerable to losing their cherished images.

More fundamentally, there’s a disconnect when scrolling through pictures on a smartphone that’s often full of distractions. Debra Norris, a professor of photographic conservation at the University of Delaware, notes, “Digital images seem a bit more distant and less approachable, lacking the conversational and enjoyable aspects present with physical images.”

Our phones often overflow with photos—mine has nearly 30,000 images—which complicates locating a specific shot from a vacation years ago. Conversely, serendipitously rediscovering old photos is nearly impossible without the assistance of tools like Apple Memories, which can resurface delightful moments lost in the digital ether.

However, I encourage individuals to take control. Instead of waiting for AI to dictate which memories to cherish, consider favoriting good photos immediately, separating treasured images from the mundane. The ultimate goal is to print the best ones for inclusion in frames, albums, or storage boxes, thereby crafting a foundational visual family history. Physical prints carry a sense of permanence and create a legacy.

Norris emphasizes, “We can take so many photographs on these phones; yet a curated box of particularly meaningful images is truly magical. Your children will cherish and pass these on to their offspring.”

Practical Steps to Preserve Your Best Memories

Once you adopt a habit of curating your photos, the printing process becomes straightforward. Numerous services allow you to upload images directly from your phone for printing in various sizes, conveniently sent to your address or available for pickup at local stores like CVS or Walgreens. The ideal choice hinges on your budget and preferences. Popular options include Nations Photo Lab and Printique, both praised for quality and ease of use. Personally, I’ve relied on Shutterfly (often offering discounts to Costco and Amazon Prime members) and Mpix, which are accessible but vary in print quality.

You may also explore printing on your own, which has its own benefits and restrictions. While I haven’t utilized dedicated photo printers, sites like Wirecutter and Rtings provide reliable reviews for those interested. Expect to invest several hundred dollars if you choose this route.

Additionally, many printing services offer album-making capabilities. Since crafting layouts can be both crucial and time-consuming, opting for specialists may save you time and ensure quality. I personally appreciated the results from Artifact Uprising when I prepared my wedding photo book, despite the higher price point. Mixbook is another service I aspire to explore next.

Alternatively, you can follow a traditional route by acquiring a physical photo album or scrapbook and placing your prints inside. It’s crucial to choose materials that are acid-free and lignin-free while, ideally, using polyester, polyethylene, or polypropylene sleeves to ensure longevity.

Make use of an acid-free archival storage box for any old photos or prints awaiting transfer. Your finished books and albums also benefit from careful storage. If you’re working with older photos, consult the Library of Congress’s guide to photo preservation for additional insights.

You might find framing captivating as well; a tradition made even more accessible in the digital era. I’ve framed several pieces through Framebridge, a service that will frame images you upload. Other options include Level Frames, while many appreciate local shops and treasures from flea markets.

No matter who handles the printing and framing, establishing a curated approach to your photos is paramount. AI tools like Apple Memories might efficiently identify poignant memories, which is excellent; just ensure you take the extra step to print them, or craft books. Whether you prefer to label favorites shortly after snapping pictures or organize digital albums monthly, the core aim remains the same: set aside time for printing those photos.

“My constant advice is to start somewhere; don’t let any feelings of guilt over past actions impede your progress,” Marshall encourages. “Treasure the photos that resonate with you.”
