The Launch of the Motorola Moto Watch Ultra: A New Step in Smartwatch Evolution

Motorola is making a noteworthy return to the smartwatch market with the introduction of the Moto Watch Ultra. Just months after reviving its smartwatch line, Motorola aims to capture the premium segment. While this new model has made significant upgrades from its predecessor, the Moto Watch, it remains more of a standard smartwatch rather than a direct competitor to the high-end offerings from brands like Apple and Samsung.

Jump to Wear OS: Enhanced Functionality

The most significant upgrade for the Moto Watch Ultra is its move to Google’s Wear OS platform, replacing the custom operating system of the previous model. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Plus Gen 1 chip, the Ultra offers enhanced functionality through access to a broad array of apps, improved integration with Android devices, and support for NFC payments via Google Wallet. Additional features include compatibility with the Gemini platform and the inclusion of Motorola’s Qira AI assistant, adding a layer of convenience for users.

Battery Life: A Step Back?

However, this advancement comes with trade-offs. Users transitioning from the Moto Watch may find the battery life underwhelming. The earlier model boasted an impressive 13 days of runtime, whereas the Moto Watch Ultra is estimated to last only 50 hours, especially when the always-on display feature is disabled.

Design and Build Quality

Weighing in at 51 grams and measuring 12mm in thickness, the Moto Watch Ultra presents a robust design. Despite having a slightly smaller 46mm face compared to its predecessor, the Ultra manages to accommodate a larger 1.5-inch OLED display with a reduced bezel size. The watch features a stainless steel casing available in black or silver, and each variant comes with two straps: one silicone and one leather, providing options for both casual and formal occasions. The silver version includes green silicone and brown leather straps, while the black variant features all-black straps.

Durability and Health Features

In terms of durability, the Moto Watch Ultra has an IP68 rating along with 5ATM water resistance, making it suitable for everyday wear and light recreational activities. The watch face is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, ensuring resilience against scratches. Health and fitness tracking are facilitated through a collaboration with Polar, covering essential metrics such as heart rate, sleep quality, stress levels, SpO2, and recovery times. Additionally, users can benefit from an AI running coach, aided by LTE and dual-band GPS. However, the Ultra lacks the specialist outdoor features found in the Apple Watch Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra, positioning it more in line with mid-range offerings.

Pricing and Availability

The Moto Watch Ultra will retail for $349.99, a competitive price point that is about half of what consumers would pay for its more feature-rich counterparts, yet still more than double the price of the basic Moto Watch, which is priced at $149.99. The watch is set to be available starting September 10th, making it an appealing option for those looking for a premium experience without the hefty price tag associated with top-tier smartwatches.
