Amazon is preparing to equip its delivery fleet with wearable tech that sees everything its drivers see. The company is actively rolling out smart glasses designed to guide drivers through their daily routes hands-free, but new details reveal the device will snap static photos almost constantly from the van to your front door.
First detailed in an analysis by Bloomberg’s Dave Lee and highlighted by The Verge, the glasses will take high-frequency photos during a driver’s shift, potentially totaling several thousand captures per route. Amazon uploads these images to its generative AI platform, called Wellspring, to build precise neighborhood maps and streamline last-mile logistics.
Hands-free guidance and high-frequency route mapping
On paper, the headgear eliminates the need for drivers to constantly check handheld smartphones. The system features a head-up monochrome display, dual front-facing cameras, prescription lens compatibility, and a wired connection to a hip-worn processing puck and battery. Through the display, drivers receive audio-visual package scanning, walking directions directly in their field of view, pet alerts, and hands-free proof-of-delivery photo capture.
According to Viraj Chatterjee, the Amazon executive leading the rollout, the primary goal is improving efficiency and reducing package drop-off errors. Amazon completed over 275,000 deliveries during pilot tests, with a target of reaching 5,000 active drivers by the end of this year and more than 20,000 by 2027.
Privacy protections, law enforcement access, and driver pressure
The constant image capture is raising eyebrows among privacy advocates and homeowners. The glasses capture front yards, private backyards, neighbors, and passersby without explicit consent. Chatterjee confirmed that Amazon automatically blurs faces and vehicle license plates before humans review the files. However, he acknowledged that Amazon has not established an opt-out mechanism for property owners or fixed retention limits. Plus, Amazon confirmed to Bloomberg that law enforcement can access the captured images with a valid warrant.
Drivers are also raising concerns about workplace surveillance. While Amazon insists the glasses are voluntary and include a manual privacy mode for personal breaks, driver communities on Reddit and elsewhere express skepticism, noting that existing in-van AI cameras already track driving behavior. Some drivers speculate the collected visual mapping data could eventually be used to train autonomous delivery robots, potentially automating the very jobs they perform.
