Meta and Reliance Join Forces for AI Infrastructure in India
As tech companies race to secure the computing power needed to train and deploy AI systems, Meta is making its first AI infrastructure bet in India, striking a data center partnership with conglomerate Reliance Industries in a market that is rapidly emerging as a hub for AI infrastructure.
The partnership, announced on Wednesday, will see Meta collaborate with Reliance on a 168-megawatt AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat. This initiative builds on their evolving relationship, which began with Meta’s multibillion-dollar investment in Reliance’s Jio Platforms and later expanded into a $100 million joint venture launched last year to develop enterprise AI solutions for customers both in India and overseas markets.
India: The New Hub for AI Infrastructure
The deal comes as India solidifies its position as a prime destination for AI infrastructure investments. Tech giants are increasingly looking for new locations for data centers in response to soaring demand for computing power necessary to train and deploy AI models. Major companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Google, OpenAI, and Uber have recently disclosed AI and cloud infrastructure investments within the country, reflecting the rapid expansion of its data center footprint over recent years.
It is noteworthy that this trend is not limited to international tech firms. Blackstone-backed AirTrunk has announced plans to invest $30 billion to construct 5 gigawatts of data center capacity in India by 2030. Furthermore, Indian conglomerates such as Adani and Tata Consultancy Services are unveiling major data center expansion initiatives aimed at accommodating AI workloads.
The Indian government has actively sought to attract these investments by implementing policy incentives, including tax exemptions for foreign cloud providers until 2047, provided that these services are managed from Indian data centers.
Rapid Growth in Data Center Capacity
India’s installed data center capacity has significantly increased from approximately 375 megawatts in 2020 to an anticipated 1.5 gigawatts by 2025, according to government reports. Industry projections suggest that this figure could rise over fivefold, surpassing 8 gigawatts by the end of the decade, driven by increased cloud adoption and growing demand for local data handling.
Details of the Meta-Reliance Partnership
The Meta-Reliance agreement illustrates the deepening ties that have developed since Meta initially invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms in 2020. This partnership marks an important step in expanding their collaboration across digital services, enterprise AI, and the vital infrastructure that will support next-generation AI systems.
Meta has committed to leasing capacity at Reliance’s state-of-the-art Jamnagar facility, which will harness renewable energy and utilize desalinated seawater for cooling. Notably, Meta plans to cover all costs associated with the energy and water needed to support its operations there.
According to Reliance, the 168-megawatt facility is expected to be operational within two years, with potential for future expansion. The data center will enhance Meta’s global infrastructure and AI computing requirements, thereby integrating India more closely into the company’s worldwide network of AI facilities.
Under the partnership agreement, Reliance will offer end-to-end services, including design and construction, renewable power, connectivity, and ongoing operations. This move underscores the conglomerate’s ambitions to position itself as a comprehensive provider of AI infrastructure for global tech entities.
Additionally, Meta has contracted nearly 1 gigawatt of new renewable energy capacity in India, through collaborations with CleanMax and Fourth Partner Energy. This new capacity will complement the renewable resources supporting the Jamnagar facility.
While the companies did not disclose the value of their agreement or the specific types of AI workloads that the facility will accommodate, this partnership marks a pivotal moment in the evolving landscape of AI infrastructure in India.
