Mazama Energy Secures $135 Million in Series B Funding
Mazama Energy, a promising geothermal startup, announced on Thursday that it has successfully raised $135 million in an oversubscribed Series B funding round. This significant financial backing is expected to propel the company forward as it explores innovative methods of harnessing geothermal energy.
Utilizing Horizontal Wells to Generate Electricity
The latest funding will enable Mazama to develop horizontal wells in super-hot rocks, each capable of generating an impressive 15 megawatts of electricity. This marks a pivotal advancement in geothermal technology, with plans to commence electricity generation as early as next year.
Ambitious Plans for Oregon
Mazama’s first site in Oregon has been projected to produce up to 10 gigawatts of electricity. Notably, this represents a substantial upward revision from last year’s estimate, where investor Vinod Khosla suggested the site had the potential for 5 gigawatts. These figures signify a striking growth trajectory as the company refines its technology.
Enhanced Geothermal: A Competitive Edge
Enhanced geothermal startups are emerging as formidable contenders in the quest to power AI data centers and other large energy consumers. Unlike traditional geothermal methods, which exploit shallower geothermal resources, Mazama is drilling deeper into hotter rock layers. The company has achieved remarkable progress, drilling beyond 10,000 feet in just 15 days, with ambitions to reach depths of approximately 15,000 feet.
At these formidable depths, Mazama can tap into heats around 750˚ F (400˚ C). Here, water transforms into a supercritical fluid, allowing it to absorb significantly more energy than conventional steam. As a result, each well stands to generate up to 10 times more power than traditional geothermal technologies, yielding a transformative impact on the energy landscape.
Global Potential of Super-Hot Rock
The implications of this technology stretch far beyond local projects. Research from the University of Twente and the Clean Air Task Force estimates that tapping just 1% of super-hot rocks globally could produce over 63 terawatts of electricity. This statistic underscores the vast potential of geothermal energy as a sustainable power source.
Future Developments and Investment
Although work at the Oregon site is still in its initial phases, Mazama has already secured land for its second development. The company aims to complete the first site by 2030, at which point it expects to generate an impressive 200 megawatts of electricity.
This recent funding round was led by Centaurus Capital and Doerr Capital, with investments from notable firms such as ConocoPhillips and Shell Ventures. Existing investors, including Khosla Ventures and Gates Frontier, have also reaffirmed their support, alongside new investors like SiteGround Capital, H. Barton Asset Management, and the Jeffrey and Marieke Rothschild Foundation.
