Major players like OpenAI, Google, and Perplexity initiated extended free premium offers to stimulate user growth in this price-sensitive market. These organizations have also backed India’s ambitions to establish itself as a leading global artificial intelligence hub. A prominent AI summit in New Delhi last week featured luminaries such as OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Anthropic’s Dario Amodei, and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai. This gathering highlighted India’s increasing significance in the global AI narrative.

Transitioning from Free to Paid Services

However, the initial promotional strategies are now coming to an end. For instance, Perplexity terminated its bundled Pro offer with Indian telecom giant Airtel in January, while OpenAI’s free ChatGPT Go access in India is no longer available. This shift sets the stage for critical insights into how the influx of newly acquired users will transition to paid subscribers.

The Revenue Challenge

While India excels in download growth, it still accounts for approximately 1% of AI app revenue despite driving around 20% of global generative AI app downloads, posing a significant monetization challenge in one of the industry’s fastest-growing regions. In 2025, adoption rates for generative AI applications surged, with downloads peaking in September and October at year-over-year growth rates of approximately 320% and 260%, respectively. However, this increase in usage did not directly translate into higher revenue. Sensor Tower data indicated that AI app in-app purchase revenue in India fell by 22% and 18% month-over-month in November and December 2025, respectively. Notably, ChatGPT’s revenue decreased even more sharply—by 33% and 32% in the same timeframe following the launch of free sub-$5 ChatGPT Go access.

ChatGPT’s Market Dominance

Remarkably, ChatGPT continues to capture over 60% of generative AI in-app revenue in India. This means shifts in its pricing strategy significantly influence the overall market’s performance.

Factors Driving Adoption

The acceleration of generative AI app adoption in India can also be attributed to various new product launches, including platforms like DeepSeek and Meta AI, along with upgrades to major chatbots like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude. Viral interest in AI-generated content played a pivotal role as well, with content creation and editing tools being featured among the top downloaded generative AI apps in India in 2025.

User Engagement Discrepancies

While user growth has been significant, engagement levels in India still lag behind more mature markets. For instance, in 2025, users in the U.S. spent approximately 21% more time per week on leading AI chatbot apps than their Indian counterparts, logging 17% more sessions on average. According to Sensor Tower, ongoing user engagement is essential for improving in-app revenues as customers become more integrated into these platforms.

Future Outlook: Challenges and Opportunities

As AI firms navigate this shifting landscape in India, the pressure on pricing is likely to persist given the young and value-conscious user demographic. Consequently, lower-cost tiers, telecom bundles, and micro-transaction models will be crucial for achieving long-term user retention. ChatGPT currently leads the Indian market headed into 2026, reporting 180 million monthly active users in January. This is followed by Google’s Gemini with 118 million, Perplexity with 19 million, and Meta AI with 12 million, underscoring the vast opportunity that lies within India’s expanding AI market.
