Grammarly Faces Lawsuit Over Unauthorized Use of Expert Identities

In a surprising turn of events, Grammarly, a prominent writing assistant tool, is being sued for using the identities of real individuals, including journalists, in its “Expert Review” AI suggestions without obtaining prior consent. This lawsuit, initiated by journalist Julia Angwin, raises serious concerns about privacy and the ethical use of personal identities in commercial applications.

Background on the Controversy

Angwin’s lawsuit, which is classified as a class-action complaint, was filed on a recent Wednesday. It asserts that Grammarly has violated the privacy and publicity rights of the experts involved. This is based on allegations that Grammarly breached laws that protect individuals’ identities from being used for commercial purposes without explicit permission.

The issue became public when Angwin discovered her identity was being utilized through fellow journalist Casey Newton. Notably, this incident was also covered in a recent exploration by The Verge, revealing that several staff members from the outlet, including editor-in-chief Nilay Patel, were similarly featured in Grammarly’s AI-generated suggestions.

Grammarly’s Response

In light of the uproar, CEO Shishir Mehrotra acknowledged the missteps in Grammarly’s approach. He stated, “The agent was designed to help users discover influential perspectives and scholarship relevant to their work, while also providing meaningful ways for experts to build deeper relationships with their fans. We hear the feedback and recognize we fell short on this. I want to apologize and acknowledge that we’ll rethink our approach going forward.”

This statement suggests that the company is taking the feedback seriously and is open to re-evaluating its practices, highlighting the importance of ethical standards when it comes to data usage and representation in AI technologies.

The implications of this lawsuit extend beyond Grammarly, as they raise broader questions about how AI platforms utilize expert identities. As AI increasingly permeates various sectors, the need for clear guidelines and ethical frameworks is more important than ever.
