Google is currently experimenting with a revamped look for the voice search interface embedded in the homescreen widget on many Android devices. This fresh design aims to enhance user interaction with Google’s expanding array of AI search tools by making them more accessible.
One Mic Button, Four Features
At present, the microphone button on Google’s homescreen search widget serves a singular purpose: facilitating voice-activated Google searches. However, according to reports from 9to5Google, a newly designed layout is being tested in the latest beta version of the Google app. This redesign introduces a swipeable toolbar within the voice search function, allowing users to seamlessly switch between four different modes: regular Search, AI Mode, Search Live, and Song Search.

This innovative layout shares similarities with Google Lens, featuring its own Search, Translate, Live, and Create switcher. Users will benefit from a system that remembers the most recent mode utilized, defaulting to it the next time the microphone button is activated. Additionally, Google is testing a four-bar waveform in the regular Search mode, which will showcase live transcription. Notably, the AI Mode tab will offer an arrow button for completing queries and a stop button that redirects users to a Search box containing a transcript for further edits.
Not Widely Available Yet
As highlighted earlier, the new interface is currently exclusive to the latest beta version of the Google app and is not universally accessible to all beta users at this moment. Google has yet to confirm when, or if, this new design will be rolled out to the broader public.
Once available, this toolbar is anticipated not only to simplify the user experience in switching among Google’s AI search tools but also to facilitate broader engagement with these features. If the redesign passes the testing phase, the microphone button on users’ home screens could become the quickest route to all the capabilities offered by Google’s AI search suite.
