Flipkart’s Surge in India’s Quick Commerce

Indian startups have spent years acclimating consumers to the convenience of receiving groceries and everyday items in mere minutes. Now, Walmart-owned Flipkart is rapidly narrowing the gap with pioneers in quick commerce as global competitor Amazon also makes its move into instant delivery.

Flipkart Minutes: A Game Changer

Launched in August 2024, Flipkart Minutes marks the e-commerce titan’s entry into the quick commerce sector. The service has recently surged to deliver approximately 1.1 million to 1.2 million orders daily, a significant increase from 390,000 to 400,000 in November. This impressive growth positions Flipkart Minutes just behind Swiggy’s Instamart, which delivers about 1.4 million orders per day.

Market Landscape

Flipkart’s rapid ascent is particularly noteworthy given its late arrival in a market dominated by established players like Instamart, Blinkit, and Zepto. Launched in 2020 and 2021 during the pandemic, Instamart and Zepto have become staples of the Indian quick-commerce ecosystem, while Blinkit has its origins as Grofers, founded in 2013.

Currently, Blinkit leads the field with approximately 3.4 million to 3.6 million daily orders, followed by Zepto, which has about 2.4 million to 2.6 million. Flipkart now stands poised to compete closely with Instamart, the smallest of the three leaders.

Instamart’s Solid Foundation

Despite Flipkart’s ambitions, Instamart maintains a robust operation with over 14 million monthly active users and more than 1,200 dark stores across over 130 cities. Notably, Swiggy has made strides in improving Instamart’s contribution margins, achieving profitability in over 45% of its dark-store network.

Expansion and Infrastructure Development

Flipkart’s recent growth can be attributed to an aggressive expansion of its delivery infrastructure. Currently, Minutes operates around 1,020 to 1,050 micro-fulfillment centers, which are strategically positioned close to customers for quick deliveries. This figure has grown from 600 in January and 340 a year ago, with plans to increase the number of facilities to 1,500 by the end of 2026.

The company can leverage its existing e-commerce customer base, which has been cultivated over many years and significant financial investment. This allows Flipkart Minutes to easily engage a large audience ready for rapid deliveries. As noted by Satish Meena, an adviser at Datum Intelligence, “Flipkart is already a serious player. Once you open 1,000 dark stores and are doing a million orders per day, it’s serious enough.”

Moreover, customer retention appears promising, with 65% to 70% of users making repeat purchases each month. Transaction frequency has also increased by 50% to 60% year-on-year.

Customer Spending Trends

Customers using Flipkart Minutes spend between ₹400 to ₹500 (approximately $4.20–$5.20) per order, with an uptick in demand for fresh produce, staples, dairy, and meats. Flipkart is actively expanding its range to include higher-end gourmet products, targeting consumers’ varied preferences.

Quick Delivery Times

Despite this expansion, Flipkart has improved delivery efficiency, with average delivery times dropping to about 11 minutes, down from 13 minutes the previous year.

A Competitive Landscape for Indian Shoppers

Flipkart’s progress occurs against a backdrop of changing consumer behaviors in India’s e-commerce market. A recent report from Bernstein indicates that, while overall consumer demand has softened, the quick commerce sector continues to thrive, with platforms enjoying healthy growth in active users.

Amazon’s Competitive Push

Amazon is also vying for a share of the Indian quick-commerce market, expanding its Amazon Now service to augment its existing e-commerce infrastructure. During CEO Andy Jassy’s visit to India in June, Amazon reported that Now has become its fastest-growing business in the country, with quarterly order doubling since its launch. The company is planning to enhance its network with over 300 cities and more than 1,000 micro-fulfillment centers to meet the demands for rapid delivery.

Industry analysts, including Meena, suggest that as consumer expectations shift towards immediate fulfillment, both Flipkart and Amazon are compelled to enhance their quick commerce capabilities, or risk losing customers to specialized platforms that excel in speed.

“Can you go back to scheduled delivery now in grocery? No,” Meena stated. “You will not go back.”
