CloudNC Secures $20 Million Funding to Enhance Manufacturing Automation
UK-based manufacturing software startup CloudNC announced a $20 million B extension round on Wednesday, bringing its lifetime total raised to $128 million. The company’s last significant round of fundraising took place four years ago, as revealed by co-founder and CEO Theo Saville in an interview with TechCrunch.
Innovating with AI-Powered CAM Assist Software
Founded in 2015 by Theo Saville and Chris Emery, who now serves as the chief science officer, CloudNC provides an advanced software solution that leverages artificial intelligence to streamline parts of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining. CNC machining plays a critical role in manufacturing by utilizing computer-controlled machines to precisely cut or shape materials for various industries, including automotive, defense, and consumer hardware.
Before machining a part, skilled machinists or Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) programmers must address vital decisions regarding tool selection, part handling, and machining strategies. Although traditional CAM software assists users during this planning phase, Saville notes that these systems often require manual input, limiting efficiency and productivity.
Redefining Traditional CAM Processes
“Traditional CAM systems are powerful, but they still necessitate considerable manual intervention,” Saville explained. CloudNC’s CAM Assist is designed to bridge this gap, enhancing traditional systems such as Autodesk Fusion and Mastercam. This innovative software supports users in making strategic manufacturing decisions by automating routine and repetitive tasks.
“CAM Assist selects appropriate tools, approach directions, and cutting feeds and speeds, then drafts the necessary code for CNC machines,” Saville added. This functionality allows users to focus on reviewing and refining the results rather than engaging in extensive planning processes. Saville further stated, “If traditional CAM is a powerful toolkit, CAM Assist acts as an expert assistant, automating initial thought processes so that skilled operators can enhance and approve the approach.”

Global Reach and Future Prospects
With over 1,000 machine shops globally utilizing CAM Assist, a staggering 80% of CloudNC’s customer base consists of manufacturers and companies in the U.S. The company employs around 80 individuals, focusing on scaling its operations and increasing adoption of their innovative technology.
“This is an optimal time to secure additional funding,” Saville remarked. The recent investment round included participation from Nimble Ventures, Calculus Venture Capital, Entrepreneur First, and Lockheed Martin’s venture arm, LM Capital. The funds will facilitate broader adoption of CAM Assist, bolster market operations, and enable the development of new products like Quote Agent.
Introducing Quote Agent
Quote Agent, targeting manufacturers, shares a similar premise with CAM Assist by helping shops evaluate the estimated costs and risks associated with new projects. This addition is particularly relevant as machine shops in the U.S. seek to reshore operations amid a skilled labor shortage in manufacturing.
“Machine shops need to quote faster, program quicker, and deliver more using their existing resources,” Saville explained. The much-anticipated Quote Agent is scheduled for launch next month.
Saville concluded with a notable analogy: “There are more ways to machine a typical CNC part than there are atoms in the universe. We have devoted years to addressing that complex issue through our own factory, software team, and valuable lessons learned from actual machining experiences.”
