Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) recently announced a significant data loss that affected records related to maternity care. However, NUH emphasized that this incident does not compromise current patient care. In their blog, they stated, “No patient information was accessed or used inappropriately as a result of this incident.”
Andy Callow, NUH’s Chief Digital and Information Officer, addressed concerns by stating the organization has completed an investigation into the incident and has implemented measures to bolster “technical controls and processes” to prevent future occurrences. “I am sorry for the concern and distress this incident may cause to women and families affected,” he remarked, highlighting the importance of maintaining trust while navigating sensitive issues.
Ongoing Investigations and Historical Context
This announcement occurs against the backdrop of a broader police investigation into allegations that over 500 mothers and babies experienced “potentially avoidable” harm or fatalities due to systemic issues within the maternity department at NUH. A review led by a senior midwife revealed significant failings, including understaffing and inadequate training, alongside a troubling pattern of disregard for parental concerns, as reported by the BBC.
In June 2025, a local police investigation found that a file containing records for hundreds of maternity care patients at NUH had likely been erased “intentionally or maliciously.” Fortunately, NUH was able to recover that critical data shortly after its deletion.

Nottinghamshire Police are now assessing whether the recent data loss is related to the ongoing investigation regarding maternity care injuries and deaths, including the possibility of filing criminal charges. Deputy Chief Constable Rob Griffin, who is overseeing the investigation, stated, “At present, no crime has been identified,” illuminating the complexities of the case as authorities continue their examination of the situation.
The Nottingham Maternity Family Group, representing families impacted by these issues, has characterized the data loss as “extremely unnerving.” Their statement underscores the vulnerabilities families face when already dealing with the fallout from preventable harm, injury, and bereavement—emphasizing that these families should not have to contend with uncertainties surrounding the security of their records and experiences.
