Microcars in Europe: A Growing Trend and New Competitors

Cars in European cities are smaller than ever. With the rising popularity of microcars, the once-beloved Italian “yoghurt pots” are being overshadowed by small electric vehicles (EVs) from China. Notably, Smart, the iconic ultracompact car brand, has also shifted its manufacturing to Chinese facilities.

Amidst the crowded microcar market, Spanish startup Liux believes it can carve out a niche with its focus on sustainability and innovative design. Their upcoming model, the Liux Big, aims to combine style and eco-friendliness, serving as a potential competitor to existing brands.

Introducing the Liux Big: A Clever Play on Words

Taking inspiration from the Swiss Microlino, Liux’s debut microcar, the Liux Big, offers a small footprint intended for urban parking challenges—so compact that it can park at a right angle to the curb. However, the name is also a nod to the ambitious vision of its founders, Antonio Espinosa de los Monteros and David Sancho, who are redefining what it means to create a “European” car.

German Precision Meets Spanish Ingenuity

While it’s true that Liux has established Spain’s first new car plant in over three decades, Espinosa contends that a fully sovereign supply chain is unrealistic. Instead, Liux aims to navigate this reality by emphasizing sustainability at every turn. According to Espinosa, “The idea of a European car does not exist,” indicating the need for innovative approaches in this competitive landscape.

A Sustainable Future

The Liux Big is designed to be environmentally friendly in various ways. Its batteries, though not produced in Europe, can be recharged at home, including through solar power. Liux places a significant emphasis on maintainability and aims to counteract modern cars’ rapid obsolescence cycles. Most notably, the car’s body is built from a unique linen-based biocomposite, allowing for easy recycling in the future.

Espinosa emphasizes that “recycling isn’t just a lab concept,” underlining the importance of construction methods that ensure material integrity for future reuse. This vision of “real circularity” stems from his previous experience co-founding Auara, a Spanish B Corp focused on sustainable bottled water.

An Engineering Perspective

David Sancho, Liux’s co-founder, brings his automotive engineering expertise to the table. Known for his work on the Bóreas hybrid supercar, Sancho has a knack for creating electric vehicles that can compete with gasoline counterparts. Together, he and Espinosa are redefining the market with their prototype, originally intended to be an electric SUV, shifting focus to the more compact and homologation-friendly Liux Big.

Production and Market Preparation

By 2026, Liux anticipates commencing sales of the Liux Big, having secured Europe-wide homologation and expanding its workforce to 65 employees. The company operates three facilities, including one that adheres to Toyota’s “lean management” principles. This efficient structure is set to enable production capabilities of up to 20,000 cars annually by 2030.

Building Anticipation Among Consumers

Liux has already generated significant interest, with over 7,500 people on a waiting list for the Liux Big, indicating its potential market appeal. This initial consumer engagement has allowed the startup to identify its target demographic, largely urban residents aged 55 to 60, suggesting that the car may primarily be viewed as a supplementary vehicle for many households.

Although this may temper aspirations of transforming traditional car ownership models, Espinosa recognizes the importance of strategic partnerships for sustained growth, particularly with fleet management companies and potential autonomous vehicle collaborations.

A Competitive Price Point

Anticipated to fall under €18,000 (roughly $21,000) before any EV subsidies, the Liux Big positions itself at a higher price tier for microcars. However, its founders believe that its sustainability features, alongside competitive performance, will help it stand out in the market. Liux aims to leverage its strengths, especially in lightweight materials and innovative design, to create a unique offering.

Emphasizing Safety and Performance

The Liux Big’s design focuses on ensuring that users have a genuine driving experience, despite its smaller size. Safety is paramount; the team is committed to thorough testing of the vehicle’s performance in various conditions, even though crash tests are not a requirement for its category. The aim is to ensure that the car handles well when cornering and braking, all while meeting the aspirations of urban drivers.

Future Aspirations

Initially, the Liux Big will be offered in two battery options, 15 kWh and 20 kWh, with a cargo version planned for the future. The company envisions itself as more than just a one-car brand, maintaining an ambitious outlook while using its €16 million funding to bring the urban version of the Liux Big to market through strategic partnerships with car dealerships across Europe.

As part of its branding strategy, the showroom showcases a unique aesthetic with features like textile screens and 3D models, setting Liux apart from its competitors. It indeed brings into question whether the notion of a distinctly European car can coexist with modern automotive trends.
