WhatsApp Introduces Scam Alert Feature for Android Beta Users
In June, news emerged that WhatsApp was working on a Scam Alert feature, a development officially elaborated on by Meta just over two weeks ago. Although the exact timeline for a widespread rollout has yet to be disclosed, the Scam Alert feature is currently accessible to select Android users who are part of WhatsApp’s beta program. What is the Scam Alert Feature?
The Scam Alert feature serves as a safeguard for users, notifying them if an incoming message from an unknown sender is flagged as a potential scam. Importantly, the sender remains unaware that their message has been evaluated by this feature. Reports indicate that WABetaInfo identified this functionality in beta version 2.26.34.1 of WhatsApp for Android.
How Does Scam Alert Work?
Upon receiving a Scam Alert warning, users have the option to either mark the sender as trusted or to block and report them. Should a user choose to trust the sender, they can also share the last five messages from that chat with WhatsApp, aimed at refining the feature’s accuracy over time.
Enabling the Feature and Data Privacy
To activate Scam Alert, users must manually enable it through WhatsApp’s Settings > Account menu, as it is designed to be an optional feature. In a recent blog post, Meta underscored the privacy of the Scam Alert function, describing it as “a new, optional feature that runs an on-device machine learning model to alert a user about potential scam messages.” This model emphasizes that no message content leaves the device for classification, nor is it automatically reported to WhatsApp, Meta, or any other entity, thereby preserving the integrity of end-to-end encryption.
