The development of this advanced skinsuit comes in response to the growing speed of the sport, as highlighted by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which issued a call earlier this year for gear that could help protect riders as they push their limits. Key Features of the Airbag Skinsuit
Weighing in at approximately 700 grams (with the airbag components accounting for around 500 grams), this new airbag system is notably lighter when compared to those used in MotoGP racing. Van Rysel claims its airbag can deploy in a mere 60 milliseconds upon impact, utilizing an advanced detection algorithm to sense impending crashes. This rapid deployment aims to minimize injury risks significantly.
Designed with both aerodynamics and comfort in mind, the skinsuit utilizes abrasion-resistant materials that help mitigate the dangers of road rash and superficial injuries. The airbag technology specifically protects vulnerable areas of the upper body that a helmet does not cover, including the core and cervical zones, as well as the spinal line.
