Exploring the Specs: Snap’s Augmented Reality Glasses

One of the most immersive experiences I’ve had with Snap’s new augmented reality glasses, known as Specs, was during a game of dominoes. In a demonstration with a Snap employee, I used hand gestures to select a virtual domino and placed it on a real table. Watching the domino snap into place was a unique experience, unlike the immersion typically offered by VR headsets or other smart glasses. It epitomized the power of shared digital experiences that augmented reality can offer.

Snap’s Commitment to AR Technology

Snap has been dedicated to developing AR glasses for over five years, producing two generations of glasses that were largely reserved for developers. Moving beyond merely being another app in a vast marketplace, Snap aims to position itself as a pioneer in the next computing platform.

Specs: Ready for Primetime?

Set to launch for consumers this fall at a price of $2,195, the Specs represent Snap’s confidence that they’ve developed a product suitable for everyday use. However, after an afternoon of testing these glasses, I remain skeptical about their readiness for widespread consumption.

Design and Usability

The Specs are noticeably bold and chunky, available in lens sizes of 47mm and 52mm. Their design serves as both a functional necessity—housing the technology requisite for standalone computing—and a statement piece, setting them apart from more discreet options like Meta’s Ray-Bans. Interestingly, though they are heavier than typical eyewear, they aren’t overly burdensome, holding securely on my face without falling during moderate activity.

Interaction and Experience

Interacting with the Specs was reminiscent of both smart glasses and VR headsets. The waveguide displays bring digital elements to life, claiming to showcase 16 million colors with high resolution, though the exact specifications remain ambiguous. The hand-tracking technology allows intuitive gestures for tasks like resizing windows or engaging with applications, but during my testing, some interactions felt finicky, requiring precision hand placement for effective response.

Augmented Reality Capabilities

Snap has outdone its competitors by delivering glasses with dual displays, providing a genuine AR effect, distinct from mere flat-screen devices. However, a limitation lies in the Specs’ 51-degree field of view, resulting in digital elements often slipping out of view, detracting from the intended immersive experience. For example, while watching a movie or playing a game, I frequently found myself physically rotating to track moving objects—a behavior that can interfere with in-person interactions.

Privacy Concerns and Social Dynamics

In keeping with contemporary tech trends, the Specs also feature an AI chatbot assistant. However, this feature felt underwhelming during tests, often responding slowly to voice commands. The social implications of using AR glasses are intriguing but complex. On one occasion, I played an audio-visual experience while continuing a conversation with a Snap representative, who reported not being able to hear anything. This lack of auditory sharing raises questions about presence and interaction, as engaging with virtual content while conversing can lead to distractions and a diminished sense of connection.

Conclusion

Snap’s Specs signify an exciting step forward in AR technology. Their potential to foster more human-like interactions through augmented reality is undoubtedly compelling. However, as competitors like Meta, Google, and Apple enter the space, it remains to be seen if Specs can deliver on their promise without becoming an impediment to genuine social presence. This initial venture into AR glasses could be groundbreaking or too premature, a narrative only time will resolve.
