Snap’s Innovative Leap into Augmented Reality Glasses

In a significant stride towards the future of augmented reality, Snap has announced the launch of its new Specs, a pair of augmented reality glasses intended for public use. This wearable technology is described as “a wearable computer built into see-through augmented reality glasses.” The Specs are priced at $2,195 and are currently available for preorder at specs.com, with a $200 refundable deposit. Snap anticipates that they will begin shipping this fall in the US, UK, and France.

A Milestone for Snap

The release of Specs marks a pivotal moment for Snap. The company made an initial foray into the smart glasses market with its original Spectacles in 2016. Since then, Snap has been diligently working on nonpublic AR versions of the Spectacles for several years. Evan Spiegel, Snap’s CEO, had initially stated that consumer AR glasses would not debut until 2026. However, this recent announcement suggests that Snap is accelerating its timeline to bring this innovative technology to market.

Specs Features and Specifications

These glasses are designed to be fully standalone, eliminating the need for additional devices. Snap emphasizes that there’s “no puck and no tether,” which contrasts with competitors like Apple’s Vision Pro that rely on an external battery pack. The Specs come in two sizes—47mm (weighing 132g) and 52mm (weighing 136g)—and include removable inserts to accommodate a broad spectrum of prescriptions.

Specs are distinct in their bold design, likely aiming to set themselves apart from competitors like Meta’s smart glasses. Sporting wide, eye-catching frames, they feature visible light and infrared cameras. An LED indicator will light up when the glasses are actively recording, ensuring transparency in usage.

Advanced Technology and User Experience

Equipped with two Snapdragon processors, the Specs enhance user experience. One processor is dedicated to “computer vision,” while the other powers AR lenses, resulting in swift hand tracking, low latency, and dynamic interactions that make digital content feel secure in the real world. This inventive approach allows the glasses to provide a rich multimedia experience with a remarkable 51-degree field of view and the capability to display 16 million colors.

The lenses also possess a remarkable feature that allows them to transition from clear to tinted within 10 seconds, enhancing user comfort in varying lighting conditions. The Specs promise an impressive battery life of up to four hours on a single charge, with a charging case that can provide four additional charges for a total of 20 hours of usage.

Additionally, the Specs can be charged using a magnetically attached cable, with the flexibility to connect the other side to devices like phones or computers, enabling content streaming directly to the glasses.

Prospective Impact on the Smart Glasses Market

The Specs raise intriguing questions about their potential positioning within the crowded market of smart glasses. They will launch in a landscape where other products, such as Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses, already exist. However, the launch comes amid rising privacy concerns associated with smart glasses, indicating that Snap is attempting to navigate a complex and competitive environment.

As of now, consumer testing of the Specs has yet to be conducted, leaving readers curious about the day-to-day experience of actual users. The ongoing evolution of smart glasses, combined with Snap’s innovative approach, will undoubtedly be fascinating to watch.

Update, June 16th: Added details about the charging cable.
