With its latest major software update, Samsung has made a tiny change to One UI, which has left Galaxy users pretty frustrated. The One UI 8.5 update has removed the available storage indicator from the Device Care menu in One UI 8.5. So now, users can only see the total storage capacity and how much space is currently used, without clearly displaying the amount of free space left.

Previously, One UI showed the exact amount of available space directly in the storage section. This was a simple, intuitive, and quite useful feature that allowed users to get all the information they needed in a single glance. Now, however, users are left to do the math, needing to subtract the used storage from the total capacity to figure out how much free space remains.

While this adjustment may seem minor, it has been particularly frustrating for those with higher-capacity devices. According to PiunikaWeb, owners of the 512GB and 1TB Galaxy models are experiencing the most irritation due to this change. The previous interface made it easy for users to quickly assess their available storage without unnecessary calculations. Comparisons shared on Reddit between One UI 8.0 and One UI 8.5 illustrate how the older version clearly displayed the free-space metric.

Unfortunately, there is no toggle setting to revert this change, leaving users with a less straightforward experience. While it is possible to add a storage widget to the home screen for tracking availability, numerous reports indicate inaccuracies with these widgets. For instance, one S25 Ultra owner noted discrepancies between the widget, which reported 418GB free, and the System Monitor Edge panel, which showed only 389GB available. Refreshing the widget did not resolve the issue, making it unreliable for accurate monitoring.

The System Monitor Edge panel remains a more dependable alternative, but it still requires extra navigation to access basic system statistics. Given that effective storage management is crucial for users who frequently shoot videos, play large games, and rely heavily on their device’s storage, the removal of an intuitive indicator detracts from the overall user experience with One UI 8.5. Samsung has not indicated whether the previous storage indicator will be reinstated in future updates, leaving users to adapt to this current situation.
