Exciting Updates Coming to the Google Pixel Watch
Google is set to roll out a significant update for the Pixel Watch, introducing a new feature called “express pay” that enhances the user experience by allowing payments with just a tap on a retail terminal. This functionality will be available for the Pixel Watch 2 and later models. With this update, users will no longer need to open the Wallet app to complete transactions, streamlining the payment process considerably.
What is Express Pay?
The express pay feature is reminiscent of Apple’s “express mode” found on the Apple Watch, which allows users to utilize compatible payment cards without the requirement of waking or unlocking the device. However, it’s important to note that Google’s express pay will require users to opt-in for this functionality, and the watch must be unlocked to make any payments.
Enhancements in Payment Features
Previously, Pixel Watch users had to double-tap the crown to access the Wallet app before executing a payment. The new express pay feature simplifies this process significantly. Furthermore, Google has previously enabled users to tap their watches for transportation services without needing to access the Wallet app, indicating a trend towards convenience in mobile banking.
New Companion Features for Pixel Phones
Alongside express pay, Pixel Watch 2 and newer models are set to receive additional features that enhance connectivity with Pixel phones. One such feature automatically locks the connected phone when it’s out of range, while another alerts users if they inadvertently leave their phone behind. These features are designed to work in conjunction with the Pixel 8 and subsequent models, reinforcing the synergy between Google’s hardware.
Streamlined Identity Checks
Google is also focusing on improving security and accessibility by speeding up identity checks when the watch and phone are linked. For instance, performing sensitive actions, such as disabling Find My Device, will now require a PIN, which Google claims will expedite the process. This enhancement is available with the Pixel Watch 3 and 4, as well as the Pixel 8 Pro and newer models (though it does not apply to the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8A).
Additional Features from March Update
The March update from Google brings even more to the table. It extends the Find Hub, a utility for locating devices, to the original Pixel Watch and a selection of other Wear OS watches. Moreover, new one-handed gestures will be introduced on the Pixel Watch 3, and the Satellite SOS feature on the Pixel Watch 4 will now cover expanded locations, including Europe, Canada, Hawaii, and Alaska.
For technology enthusiasts and Pixel Watch users, these updates signify Google’s commitment to enhancing user experience, security, and functionality. As the digital landscape evolves, keeping up with these advancements is essential for maximizing the utility of your devices.
