Pixel Watch Models Get Major Health Update
The race to enhance health and fitness wearables continues, with Google leading the pack with its latest update for the Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5 models. This free upgrade, now rolling out, introduces exciting new features that allow users to monitor vital health trends, enhancing their overall wellness experience.
New Health Metrics
- A free update is rolling out to the Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5.
- It adds blood pressure and insulin resistance trends with monthly reports.
- Sleep breathing quality metrics are being introduced too.
As announced by Google, users can now track blood pressure trends and insulin resistance—features previously unavailable on competing models like the Apple Watch. While these smartwatches do not offer real-time clinical readings, they provide long-term patterns of these measurements, with monthly assessments to help users understand their health better.
Notably, the insulin resistance trend has been developed using more than a trillion data points gathered from over 5 million users, illustrating Google’s commitment to leveraging big data in health technology. Similarly, the blood pressure model is based on billions of minutes of raw heart and movement data, ensuring a reliable representation of health trends.
Sleep Quality and Safety Features
In addition to the new metrics, the update introduces sleep breathing quality trends. Users will now receive a nightly report detailing how their breathing changed throughout the night, offering insight into their sleep quality and helping them design optimal sleep routines.
The Pixel Watch 4 and 5 models will also feature Breathing Emergency Detection in select European markets, including France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. This function can identify dangerous drops in oxygen saturation and even alert emergency services if necessary, showcasing the smartwatch’s focus on user safety.
If you are a Fitbit Air user awaiting similar features, blood pressure and insulin resistance trends will be available on your device later this year, albeit with the necessity of a Google Health Premium subscription—a requirement not present for Pixel Watch users.
