The online world is buzzing with the news that Apple is set to have a new chief executive later this year. Tim Cook has announced that in September, he will hand over the reins to John Ternus, who currently serves as the Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering at Apple.
In short, Ternus is the head hardware honcho across all of Apple’s products, but this role will soon change, as the big promotion is less than six months away.

Ternus, by all accounts, is a reliable presence and a steady hand—possessing a temperament similar to that of Tim Cook. He’s poised to take over steering the company through whatever tumultuous challenges lie ahead, such as the RAM crisis projected for the remainder of the decade. Interestingly, Ternus is 50 years old, which aligns with Tim Cook’s age when he first assumed leadership of Apple back in 2011.

While Ternus may exhibit a more measured and risk-averse demeanor—similar to Tim Cook’s—one key distinction is that he is fundamentally an engineer. Ternus has been deeply involved in the minutiae of hardware throughout his career, leading to hopes that his engineering perspective will shape the design and implementation of future Apple products.
His unique background will assist Ternus in making top-level decisions that align with Apple’s hardware objectives. Interestingly, his first job post-university was with a VR company where he worked from 1997 through 2001, contributing to the development of VR headsets during its formative years. This experience could provide him critical insights for the development of Apple’s Vision Pro headset, which has faced challenges, particularly concerning its pricing.

Prior to his role at Virtual Research Systems, Ternus attended the University of Pennsylvania, where his senior project was a mechanical ‘feeding arm’ designed for quadriplegics, controlled by head movements. This innovative thinking could align well with Apple’s rumored project involving a robotic arm that incorporates a screen—a concept that could yield fruitful collaboration during Ternus’s tenure.

3. Rush to the Top
Rush – The Spirit Of Radio – YouTube
As noted on Reddit, Ternus is a fan of the rock band Rush, which is evidenced by a quote attributed to him in his yearbook: “Some are born to move the world to live their fantasies.” This lyric is lifted from the song “Losing It” by Rush. Interestingly, it seems Ternus is not alone in his fandom at Apple, as Craig Federighi may also be an admirer of the band, even allegedly singing their hits during office karaoke events.
4. The Other Side of Ternus

Contrary to typical assumptions about hardware nerds, Ternus has an adventurous streak. As reported by Fortune, during his youth, he was an accomplished swimmer and earned ‘all-time letter winner’ status on the men’s swimming team at the University of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, Bloomberg highlights his passion for cycling and car racing, often taking Apple colleagues along for off-road rallying adventures in upstate Washington.
5. Ternus Has a LinkedIn Page — of Sorts

Unlike Tim Cook, Ternus does maintain a LinkedIn profile; however, its sparse nature raises questions. As identified by an observant Redditor, Ternus’s page appears nearly bare and has lacked updates, though such minimalism is often viewed positively in professional circles.
At one point, the profile even lacked a photo, but there seems to be a recent addition—perhaps Ternus will enhance it with more content in the future. Alternatively, he may decide to remove it entirely. Only time will tell.
