The iPhone 17 starts at $799 / £799 for 256GB and has been on sale since September 2025. In contrast, the iPhone 17e lands at a more budget-friendly $599 / £599 for 256GB, replacing the 16e as Apple’s most affordable current-generation iPhone. Pre-orders open in early March, with general availability shortly after.

Better yet, there’s no 128GB entry tier on the 17e. Apple has doubled the starting storage compared to older budget models without increasing the price. That makes the gap between the two phones purely about features rather than storage upselling.

A $200 / £200 difference is substantial, but what features will you lose over the regular iPhone 17?

Design and display

Given their close relationship, there’s not a massive design difference between both handsets. Both have an aluminium frame, glass back, and second-generation Ceramic Shield on the front. Both are IP68 rated, and both have an Action button. However, there are some notable differences.

The iPhone 17 has a larger display at 6.3 inches, while the 17e sticks with a 6.1-inch screen. Size aside, the iPhone 17 finally brings 120Hz ProMotion to the standard line, along with an always-on display. In contrast, the 17e remains at 60Hz and doesn’t support always-on functionality.

In theory, scrolling and animations should feel smoother on the iPhone 17, but we’ve yet to test out a comparison ourselves. It could very well be that you’d only notice if you were a pixel-peeping tech reviewer, so stay tuned for the final verdict.

Elsewhere, the iPhone 17’s display is roughly 25 percent brighter than the 17e’s, which should make a noticeable difference outdoors.

Another big difference is the cut-out. The 17 uses Apple’s newer Dynamic Island, while the 17e keeps the notch, making it the only modern iPhone in the current range without Apple’s newer design.

Color choices also differ. The 17e comes in Soft Pink, Black, and White, while the iPhone 17 serves up Lavender, Sage, and Mist Blue alongside Black and White.

Cameras

iPhone 17e

Both phones share a 48MP main Fusion camera capable of Apple’s 2x “optical-quality” crop zoom. For everyday photography at 1x, you’re not sacrificing core image quality by choosing the 17e. However, the iPhone 17 adds a second rear lens—a 48MP ultra-wide.

That extra camera changes the experience significantly. Ultra-wide framing allows for group shots, architecture, tight interiors, and more creative compositions. It also enables better macro flexibility. The 17e does not have an ultra-wide lens, so that versatility simply isn’t there.

Stabilization differs as well. The iPhone 17’s optical stabilization system is more advanced than the 17e’s, and the 17 also supports the latest-generation Photographic Styles, which the 17e misses out on. Another omission on the 17e is Dual Capture, which allows the simultaneous use of multiple cameras on the 17. For content creators, it’s a clear point in the 17’s favor.

Up front, the difference is clearer. The iPhone 17 has an 18MP Centre Stage camera, which automatically reframes you as you move, while the 17e keeps a 12MP TrueDepth camera without Centre Stage support.

Video performance is strong on both devices, featuring 4K recording and Dolby Vision HDR, but overall camera flexibility sits firmly with the iPhone 17. If smartphone photography is your jam, it’s hard to ignore the extra features on the iPhone 17.

Performance and battery

iPhone 17e

Both phones run Apple’s A19 chip. The 17e uses a slightly trimmed version with one fewer GPU core, but in everyday use, performance should feel broadly similar. Apps should launch instantly, multitasking should be buttery smooth, and Apple Intelligence features are fully supported too.

As for battery life, Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback, compared to 26 hours on the 17e. Charging is slightly faster on the iPhone 17 as well; it supports faster wired charging and higher maximum wireless charging speeds than the 17e.

However, the iPhone 17e does support MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging up to 15W, along with USB-C fast charging.

Overall, in real-world use, you won’t notice much of a difference in performance, which is rather nice.

Verdict

iPhone 17e

The iPhone 17e gets plenty right, on paper at least. It delivers current-generation A19 performance, 256GB of storage as standard, MagSafe support, improved wireless charging over its predecessor, and a capable 48MP camera—all at $599 / £599.

However, the iPhone 17 earns its premium at $799 / £799. The 120Hz ProMotion display and increased brightness give it an edge, but it’s the addition of an ultra-wide lens that makes it the better choice for those who take more than casual snaps on their phones.

If value is your priority and you want modern Apple performance without stretching your budget, though, the iPhone 17e is still a smart choice.

If you care about display smoothness, camera versatility, and getting the fullest version of Apple’s standard iPhone experience, the iPhone 17 will serve you better.
