Remember the HTC Vive Eagle AI glasses that debuted much to everyone’s surprise last year? Well, they’re now back in the news again. After the initial launch in the company’s home base, Taiwan, HTC went silent about their global expansion. A full year later, the HTC Vive Eagle smart glasses are finally rolling out in the US, Europe, the UK, and Australia.
HTC Vive Eagle Smart Glasses are now available in the US
The HTC Vive Eagle glasses are engineered for an array of daily activities, relying on advanced interactions through vision and voice commands. These sleek glasses promise a comfortable fit, appealing to a broad audience. In the US market, HTC offers two distinct frame styles: square frames available in coffee, black, and berry red, and round frames in charcoal, clear brown, and navy. Users can also select lenses tailored to their needs, with options including the standard Zeiss lens, sunglasses, or auto-darkening photochromic lenses.
Under the hood, the HTC Vive Eagle packs a Snapdragon AR Gen 1 chip with 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Fueling the device is a 235mAh battery that boasts a standby time of up to 36 hours. Charging is facilitated through a flexible pogo-pin cable, moving away from conventional charging cases.
Choice of AI and Privacy Enhancements
The glasses feature a 12MP front-facing ultrawide camera capable of recording videos for up to ten minutes. Additionally, it supports slow-motion recordings for up to one minute. The device enables live streaming to platforms like YouTube and Twitch, with recording capabilities of 2K resolution in a vertically-optimized format for social media sharing. On the durability side, the HTC Vive Eagle holds an IP54 rating, ensuring a degree of water and dust resistance.
For voice interactions, users can choose between OpenAI and Gemini AI, allowing flexibility based on the tasks at hand. HTC also includes its own Vive AI, which can be activated without a wake word; a configurable side button enables this functionality. Users will hear responses through an array of open-ear stereo speakers embedded within the glasses. Importantly, HTC emphasizes its commitment to user privacy, stating that they do not collect data for training purposes.
To bolster privacy, the HTC Vive Eagle includes several protective measures. The notification LED cannot be turned off, and if someone nearby exclaims “stop filming,” the device will halt recording. Moreover, the glasses will cease recording if they are not being worn, reflecting HTC’s consideration for user concerns regarding privacy and consent.
Price and Availability
The HTC Vive Eagle glasses have a starting price of $499 in the US for models with clear or sunglass lenses. For those wishing for the auto-darkening photochromic lenses, the price extends to $599. The glasses are available for purchase in the US starting today, with European and UK shipments set to commence on September 21st.
