Google Enhances Phone App with “Expressive Calling” Feature

What Happened: We’ve all been there—staring at a ringing phone and wondering who could be calling and why. Google is stepping in to ease that uncertainty with an innovative feature called “Expressive Calling.”

  • Google is reportedly working on a feature that allows users to tag a reason for their call before the receiver even picks up.
  • Recent code discovered in the beta version of the Phone app (codenamed “expresso”) suggests that users will be able to select a reason—like “Catch up,” “News to share,” or “Quick question”—before making a call.
  • This information will be sent directly to the recipient’s device, giving them a preview of the call’s purpose on their screen.
  • Interestingly, there’s an “Urgent” option that takes this feature up a notch. If selected, and both parties have the feature enabled, calls marked as urgent can bypass “Do Not Disturb” settings, making an audible sound and displaying a special missed call alert. Currently, this functionality looks to be exclusive to Pixel devices at launch.

Why Is This Important?

In today’s fast-paced world, many people find the idea of answering phone calls less appealing. Screening calls has become a common practice due to the prevalence of spam and scams.

  • This innovative feature may transform phone etiquette by borrowing the contextual values we appreciate in messaging apps and bringing that to voice calls.
  • It rejuvenates the phone application, making it feel more relevant and user-friendly. The built-in emergency feature for bypassing DND settings adds a necessary safety upgrade that doesn’t rely on third-party applications.

Why Should You Care?

If you tend to keep your phone on silent mode (and let’s be real, many of us do), this feature is a game changer.

  • You won’t miss crucial calls during meetings or while napping, ensuring that genuine emergencies reach you.
  • On the other hand, seeing a “Catch up” label means you can safely ignore it until you’re available.
  • This development allows you to screen calls without the associated guilt, enabling better time management.

What’s Next?

Though Google hasn’t provided a formal launch date for this feature, the presence of the code within the beta app indicates that it could be part of an upcoming Pixel Feature Drop.

  • Initially, it is expected to launch exclusively on Pixel devices, but there are hopes for a wider rollout to other Android devices in the future.
  • As the feature matures, users might even have the option to compose custom reasons for their calls.
