Google Maps has transformed from a simple navigation app into a multifaceted AI-driven discovery platform, thanks to the integration of Gemini and features like Ask Maps. Excitingly, it appears that the app might be gearing up to introduce a feature that would allow users to place food orders via conversational AI.

Recent insights from Android Authority’s Authority Insights reveal that the latest beta version of Google Maps for Android contains references to an unreleased feature aimed at making food ordering seamless. Although the functionality isn’t activated yet, an APK teardown has uncovered code strings suggesting that Google is in the active development phase of this important feature.

Gemini Could Revolutionize Your Food Ordering Experience

The evidence for this new capability comes from Google Maps version 26.27.00.941319029 for Android. During the aforementioned APK teardown, Android Authority identified several text strings that reference the potential to “Ask Maps to order food.” Some of the discovered prompts include phrases like “Say what you’re craving, discover local favorites, and Maps will order for you – even while you’re on the go,” along with interactive buttons titled “Try it out” and “Maybe later.”

If launched as described, this feature could significantly ease one of the most common tasks users undertake after opening Google Maps. Instead of having to manually search for nearby restaurants, browse menus, switch to a delivery app, and complete the checkout process, users may simply describe their meal cravings and let Gemini handle the rest efficiently.

This rollout represents a pivotal shift in Google’s ambition toward developing AI agents that can complete tasks rather than merely responding to queries. Over the past year, Gemini has evolved beyond providing information to include functionalities such as booking appointments, managing calendars, and enhancing everyday productivity. Food ordering would thus serve as another practical application of this innovative vision.

Key Questions Remain to Be Answered

Several questions remain, including whether Google Maps will integrate directly with restaurant ordering systems or rely on third-party delivery services. Furthermore, it’s uncertain whether this feature will operate entirely in the cloud or leverage Google’s newer on-device AI capabilities to enhance performance.

This distinction is significant, especially considering Google’s recent demonstrations of agentic AI features on the Pixel 10 series. These features can autonomously perform tasks, including placing orders. If the Maps food-ordering feature employs similar technology, its availability might initially be restricted to newer Pixel devices before being rolled out to a broader range of Android smartphones.

For users, the appeal of such a feature is clear. Ordering takeaway while commuting or even reserving food ahead of arrival at a restaurant could save precious time and reduce friction between discovering a dining option and actually enjoying a meal.

As with any APK teardown, there’s no assurance that this feature will reach the public. Google has a history of testing capabilities that never become official products. Nonetheless, given the rapid expansion of Gemini throughout Google’s ecosystem, AI-powered food ordering within Google Maps feels more like a question of when rather than if.
