Samsung is transforming the experience of smartwatch users with the introduction of seamless updates on its latest device, the Galaxy Watch 9. For the first time, users can enjoy a smoother transition during firmware updates, allowing their smartwatches to install the necessary upgrades in the background.
Samsung is bringing seamless updates to wearables with the Galaxy Watch 9
Seamless updates have been a part of Android since Nougat was released around a decade ago, but Samsung has notably lagged in incorporating this feature across its devices. The Galaxy A55 was a pioneer within Samsung’s lineup, and the Galaxy S25 extended this functionality to flagship models. Now, the Galaxy Watch 9 takes the lead in offering this capability to smartwatch users, effectively eliminating prolonged downtime during updates.
Users began reporting this new option after the Galaxy Watch 9 received its first software update, which included the August 2025 security patch. During this update, users discovered that the watch could now handle the download and installation of new firmware simultaneously while maintaining functionality, signifying a significant improvement in user experience.
While it may lack flashiness, the addition of seamless updates greatly enhances convenience. Traditionally, software updates would make a device unusable during installation, forcing users to wait before resuming normal operations. With seamless updates, however, background processes handle installations discreetly, allowing the user to continue utilizing the watch seamlessly until they are prompted to restart the device to complete the update.
Old-gen models will not support it
Despite its advantages, Samsung has not prominently advertised the seamless updates feature, as it wasn’t listed among the Galaxy Watch 9’s primary attributes. Users stumbled upon this functionality independently while installing firmware updates. The potential for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 to also adopt seamless updates exists, given its simultaneous launch with the Watch 9, but confirmation is still pending.
It’s crucial to note that Samsung cannot retroactively enable seamless updates for previous Galaxy Watch models. This innovative feature is contingent on specific hardware and software architecture, which cannot be altered via software updates. Therefore, older Galaxy Watches will unfortunately not benefit from this significant enhancement.
