Building My First PC: A Journey Through AI Assistance

For years, I had been putting off the daunting task of building my first PC. Despite being surrounded by home servers and custom builds during my upbringing, the thought of assembling my own rig felt intimidating. It sat on my bucket list, patiently waiting for attention, while I procrastinated on every initial step of research. However, when the opportunity arose to build my own setup for the latest season of “AI Planned It,” I knew I had to jump at the chance. But, as I would soon discover, what seemed like a dream gig turned into a whirlwind of anxiety and unforeseen complications.

Three weeks, two chatbots, and two twenty-minute videos later, I was left questioning whether this had been the best or worst decision of my career.

How Do You Solve a Problem Like a RAM Crisis?

If you’ve been following the PC building scene, you know it hasn’t been particularly enjoyable in recent years, especially if you’re budget-conscious. With ongoing chip shortages, RAM scarcity, and persistent supply-demand issues, the path to that coveted lag-free AAA gaming experience has only grown more complicated. This complexity was even steeper for a first-time builder like me—trying to grasp what a PCIe slot is or figuring out the myriad fan connectors for a cooler felt overwhelming.

To navigate these challenges, I enlisted the help of two of the most prominent general-use LLMs (Large Language Models): ChatGPT and Gemini. The goal? Assessing how effectively these chatbots could assist a novice like me in selecting the right components for my first PC build.

AI in Action

The first step was setting up a detailed scene for both chatbots. I prompted them to act as experienced computer technicians, tasked with helping first-time builders recommend parts and construct their own desktop gaming computers. The expectation was clear: they needed to consider factors like market insights, cost versus value, performance, compatibility, and tailored recommendations based on user needs.

Here’s the breakdown of my project prompt:

The prompt: Act as an experienced computer technician to assist first-time PC builders in selecting parts and building their desktop gaming computer.

This involved several steps: understanding user needs, providing multiple build options, justifying decisions, and offering thorough reasoning on costs and value. Both AI models were asked to consider the longevity of components and provide specific building instructions once the parts were selected.

Refine Your Search

In my experience, ChatGPT excelled at evaluating my needs from the outset. While it presented a couple of technical terms that were challenging at first, its thoroughness was commendable. Gemini, in comparison, posed fewer but more beginner-friendly questions. Feedback on their performance from other users could further enrich this evaluation.

Here’s a glimpse into the questionnaires provided by both AI models. Feel free to adapt these for your own PC-building journey.

ChatGPT PC Building Questionnaire

  • Your total budget (include your country to account for regional price differences).
  • What’s included in that budget? (e.g., just the tower, or also peripherals?).
  • What games do you play most?
  • Your target resolution and performance.
  • Interest in ray tracing or similar technologies?
  • Any non-gaming uses (like streaming or creative work)?
  • Size and aesthetic preferences.
  • Connectivity needs (Wi-Fi, USB, etc.).
  • Upgrade philosophy.
  • Specific brands or parts to prefer or avoid.
  • Willingness to buy new or refurbished parts.

Gemini PC Building Questionnaire

  • Total budget for the PC tower (excluding peripherals).
  • Your performance goals and resolution.
  • Your gaming library.
  • Aesthetics and form factor.
  • Uses beyond gaming.
  • Your shopping location (country).

Evaluating AI Recommendations

The next step involved submitting my responses to both AI platforms. Interestingly, despite supplying similar information to both, the approach and specific recommendations varied. When it came down to the actual PC builds, both models provided components that were compatible, which was reassuring. However, the overall experience revealed a number of challenges.

While ChatGPT showcased better market knowledge, some nuances were still missed. Both chatbots struggled to provide real-time pricing and links to products, leading to unforeseen hurdles and additional legwork on my part. Nevertheless, I found comfort in consulting with Matt Hanson, TechRadar’s computing expert, who helped me navigate this overwhelming process.

The Bottom Line

In summary, while AI can assist in building a gaming PC, it clearly can’t do it all. The experience is fraught with unexpected complications and anxieties, and ultimately, human intuition and expertise can complement AI tools effectively. If you’re considering entering the world of PC building, prepare yourself for a blend of both skillsets—tech-savvy and human insight.

Ultimately, as I navigated through the ups and downs of this journey, I remained skeptical of fully relying on AI for hands-on tasks like PC building. It’s a learning experience that truly asks for personal involvement.
