Revolutionizing Robotics: The Leap to Human-like Sensitivity

As technology evolves, robots are increasingly adept at perceiving their environments through sight, sound, and movement. However, the sense of touch remains a significant missing piece in this technological puzzle. At CES 2026, Ensuring Technology unveiled groundbreaking innovations in artificial skin that could provide robots with a sense of touch reminiscent of human sensitivity, enabling them to truly “feel” their world rather than merely interact with it.

Closing the Gap in Robotic Sensitivity

Humans leverage touch to interact with objects, apply appropriate force, and adjust grip when necessary. In contrast, most robots operate with limited feedback, which can lead to inefficiencies and errors in tasks requiring finesse. Ensuring Technology’s mission is to bridge this gap by replicating how human skin processes and reacts to touch.

The Innovative Tacta Sensor

Tacta, a multi-dimensional tactile sensor, is engineered for robotic hands and fingers. Each square centimeter of this sensor houses 361 sensing elements, sampling data at a rate of 1000Hz. The company asserts that this level of sensitivity rivals that of human touch. Remarkably, the sensor is just 4.5mm thick, integrating sensing, data processing, and edge computing into a single module.

During the CES demonstration, Ensuring Technology showcased a robotic hand completely outfitted with Tacta, featuring a total of 1,956 sensing elements distributed across the fingers and palm. This configuration creates a comprehensive network of tactile awareness, revolutionizing the way robots can interact with their environment.

HexSkin: Scaling Touch Technology

HexSkin takes the concept of tactile sensing a step further by enabling touch across larger surfaces. Designed in a hexagonal, tile-like structure, HexSkin can conform to complex curves, making it ideal for humanoid robots.

The insights shared at CES 2026 illuminate the rapid advancements in robotic technology and underscore the importance of integrating touch sensitivity. We witnessed innovations like LG’s CLOiD home robot, designed to assist with household tasks, alongside humanoid robots capable of playing tennis with remarkable skill and agility. Companies like Boston Dynamics showcased models like Atlas, demonstrating advanced balance and movement capabilities.

While these robots excel in seeing and maneuvering, most still rely predominantly on vision and rigid sensors. By incorporating human-like touch through artificial skin, we may be on the brink of a breakthrough that allows robots to exhibit a more human-like understanding of their environment.
