The Apple Watch Series 12 and Ultra 4: A Leap Forward in Health Monitoring
The Apple Watch Series 12 and its more robust counterpart, the Apple Watch Ultra 4, were unveiled at Apple’s ‘Surprise and Shine’ event alongside the new iPhone Duo. While my expectations were high for a complete design overhaul, the introduction of smart new color options and an impressive suite of health features certainly exceeded preliminary hopes.
Despite the lack of major visual changes, the new health monitoring tools are impressively intelligent, insightful, and tailored to the user’s needs. For those invested in wellness, these updates may well outweigh any design reservations.
Health Features Exclusive to the New Models
As of now, it’s unclear whether previous Apple Watch models will gain access to the new health capabilities introduced with the Series 12 and Ultra 4. Given that these enhancements are rooted in Apple Intelligence, they appear to be optimized for this latest generation, but their presence is sure to benefit health-conscious users nonetheless.

A standout addition is the revamped Health app, now capable of performing full body assessments in conjunction with the iPhone’s camera. This feature allows one to monitor various fitness metrics, including VO2 max, which gauges the body’s oxygen consumption during exercise — a crucial indicator of fitness level. To execute a VO2 max assessment, simply position your iPhone vertically against a wall for comprehensive measurements while following a coach-guided workout. An Apple Watch and compatible audio devices are required to get accurate readings.
New Features: Health Age and Readiness Score
While Apple may be a bit late to the party with the Health Age feature—an idea already adopted by companies like Garmin and Whoop—it has finally made its debut on the Apple Watch. This feature, which is accessible in the new Longevity tab of the Health app, offers insights into various health domains including heart health, mental wellbeing, nutrition, and hearing.
Your Health Age is computed by assessing multiple facets of your health profile, integrating them into a single score that helps compare your metrics against standard health levels for your age and gender.

In addition to Health Age, the new models introduce an upgraded LED sensor array that enhances skin contact, resulting in improved heart rate and heart rate variability (HRV) accuracy. This upgrade supports a new Readiness score, which serves as a vital tool for optimizing physical performance.
With Readiness, users are presented with a score from 0 to 10 based on various metrics, including Vitals, Sleep Score, and recent activity. This score provides insights into whether it’s prudent for the user to take it easy or challenge themselves physically.

With these enhanced features, the Apple Watch is stepping beyond mere fitness tracking into a realm of comprehensive wellness monitoring. The revamped Insights tab in the Health app delivers timely information about various health metrics, aiding users in staying informed about their overall wellbeing.
