Apple Surprises Users with Update for Older iPhones

In a move that has delighted long-time Apple enthusiasts, the tech giant has rolled out an update for its older models, ensuring that iPhones remain functional nearly a decade after their initial launch. On the heels of releasing iOS 26.2.1, Apple has also introduced iOS 12.5.8 for devices still operating on iOS 12, an astonishing eight years after the original release.

Continuing Support for Legacy Models

The latest update is available for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, models that originally debuted 13 and 12 years ago, respectively. The iPhone 5s first hit the market in September 2013, while the iPhone 6 followed closely in September 2014. With the introduction of iOS 12.5.8, Apple is not only extending the lifespan of these devices but also ensuring that essential features like iMessage, FaceTime, and device activation remain operational well past January 2027.

Importance of Certificate Extension

According to Apple’s release notes, this update specifically extends the certificate essential for the functionalities mentioned above. Without this extension, some certificate-restricted features would have ceased to work upon the expiration of their existing certificates. This proactive step means that users can continue utilizing core features without interruption for several more years.

Recent Security Updates

Prior to this update, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 received significant software updates in January 2023, where Apple addressed critical security vulnerabilities. Apple has a long-standing commitment to providing at least five years of security updates for every iPhone model, although it often extends support well beyond the promised period.

Comparison with Other Models

For context, the iPhone 6s, which debuted 11 years ago, still received a security update as recently as September 2025 with iOS 15.8.5. Just today, it too received iOS 15.8.6, mirroring the same certificate extension offered to the older devices.

Commitment to Current and Legacy Devices

In addition to these noteworthy updates for older models, Apple also released new versions of iOS 18 and iOS 16, ensuring that current devices remain up-to-date while still providing support for its oldest iPhones. This approach clearly demonstrates Apple’s commitment to its diverse user base, blending innovation with a deep respect for legacy systems.
