Apple is gearing up to introduce a promising new feature aimed at enhancing interoperability between iPhones and Windows PCs, specifically for users in the European Union. This upcoming feature will facilitate the seamless sharing of text and other supported content across both platforms, enabling users to copy on one device and paste on the other effortlessly. However, Apple has indicated that this feature is not anticipated to be available until fall 2027.
The initiative arose following Microsoft’s formal proposal to Apple via its EU Interoperability Request system. Following this request, Apple initiated the development process in March 2023 and subsequently shared its implementation plan in June.
Apple Plans Clipboard Syncing Between iPhones and Windows PCs
If all goes as planned, users will be able to copy various types of content from their iPhones and paste them directly onto Windows PCs, and vice versa. The convenience of this feature is underscored by the fact that the clipboard will remain synchronized even if the relevant application is not open on the device, meaning users won’t need to keep the app running in the foreground for the functionality to work.
According to Apple’s official documentation regarding this request, the company also envisions permitting developers to create extensions for clipboard sharing. These extensions would enable paired devices, including Windows PCs, to exchange clipboard content but would require users to grant one-time permission for this functionality to be enabled.
It’s important to note that Apple has stated that implementing this feature necessitates substantial engineering efforts. This explains the timeline, as the company does not foresee it being ready until the fall of 2027. Initially, the feature will be made available through a developer beta, with later public release anticipated after thorough testing.
Since this feature is tied to the European Union’s interoperability regulations, Apple has yet to confirm if it will be rolled out in other regions. However, there remains the possibility that support could expand beyond the EU in the future.
