Apple has recently launched macOS Tahoe 26.6.1, responding to a critical Screen Sharing vulnerability. This flaw could enable an attacker on the same network to authenticate without valid credentials, thus posing significant security risks.

The timing of this release is particularly noteworthy, given that the Apple security notes for macOS 26.6, which was initially issued on July 27, already highlighted three separate vulnerabilities involving the Screen Sharing Server. These earlier vulnerabilities underscore the potential insecurity of Screen Sharing even before the latest update.

This follow-up update comes just under two weeks after the initial 26.6 release. In addition to Tahoe, Apple has also rolled out corresponding updates for macOS Sequoia and Sonoma, reflecting a proactive approach to security across multiple operating systems.

What Apple Fixed in macOS 26.6

According to Apple’s security notes, the macOS 26.6 update addresses three separate vulnerabilities impacting the Screen Sharing Server. Each of these vulnerabilities is documented with its own CVE identifier.

The vulnerabilities identified include:

  • CVE-2026-43779: This flaw could allow an application to intercept network connections intended for another process.
  • CVE-2026-43777: It poses a remote denial-of-service risk that could disrupt services.
  • CVE-2026-43760: This vulnerability could permit an app to access sensitive user data.

These are not merely variations of the same issue; they each present distinct risks, thereby amplifying the urgency of the update.

Why the New Flaw is Different

The issue addressed in macOS 26.6.1 is particularly concerning because it relates directly to authentication. As reported by Macworld, the new flaw could allow an attacker on the same network to gain unauthorized access to Screen Sharing functionalities, bypassing standard credentials.

This differentiates it from the previous three flaws addressed in the earlier update. Nevertheless, the recurrence of multiple unrelated vulnerabilities in the same category calls for more than routine maintenance attention. It underscores the importance of continual vigilance in software security.

Which Macs Should Get the Update

The patch is not limited to macOS Tahoe; it extends to macOS Sequoia 15.7.9 and macOS Sonoma 14.8.9, addressing the same authentication vulnerability. If you are utilizing Screen Sharing or have it enabled on a Mac that regularly connects to shared networks, it is highly advisable to implement this update as soon as possible. Given that the latest flaw involves authentication, it is a prudent step to enhance your security measures across multiple macOS iterations.

To ensure your device remains secure, take the time to update and protect your sensitive data. For further details, check the source Here.
