New Apple Operating Systems: Photography Tips for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27

New Apple operating systems klaxon! As ever, Apple has provided a plethora of new tools for photography enthusiasts—those who spend their time taking photos, editing images, and perhaps even capturing moments of themselves engaged in editing, akin to a scene from a Christopher Nolan movie. What’s clear is you’ll want to use these new features. Below, I’ve compiled some of the best tips for enhancing your photography experience on iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.

Use New Camera Controls

In Camera for iPhone, a simple swipe left on the screen gives you access to the enhanced Siri mode. You can then press the shutter and ask your iPhone what it sees. Apple has also relocated the tools menu right next to the shutter button, making it much more thumb-friendly than its previous position, which was almost microscopic at the top of the screen. For iPhone 18 Pro owners, even more sophisticated features are expected, though details remain under wraps until the device is officially released.

Try Clean Up

When editing an image in Photos, you can select the ‘Clean Up’ option under Tools. This feature allows you to draw over areas you wish to remove, and it includes a ‘High Quality’ parameter designed to enhance results. However, the effectiveness can vary; thus, it’s prudent to use the Clean Up feature before applying other AI tools or ‘intelligent edits’ as termed by Apple.

Extend and Reframe a Photo

Apple has introduced new Extend and Reframe tools, enabling users to add new content or adjust perspectives using standard drag and pinch gestures. It’s advisable to exercise restraint with these features, as exaggerated changes can lead to unrealistic outcomes.

Make a Slideshow

If you enjoy creating slideshows, you’ll be pleased to know that on both iPhone and iPad, you can now select any photos from your library and start a slideshow via the ‘…’ > ‘Start Slideshow’ option. Customization options for transitions and music are available, allowing you to personalize the viewing experience.

Save Video Stills

Gone are the days of awkward screen grabs to capture a perfect moment in your video. By selecting ‘…’ (Image on Mac) and then ‘Save Video Frame as Photo’, you can easily save stills directly from your videos, maintaining the original timestamp and location metadata.

Turn On Video Subtitles

For personal videos, Apple now allows you to enable subtitles for instant live captions during playback, good for quieter environments or for viewers with hearing impairments. Note, however, that this feature currently supports only US English.

Sync Photos Immediately

Previously, syncing photos from your iPhone could be a slow process. Users can now temporarily override this delay by navigating to Collections, tapping their profile picture, and selecting ‘Sync Immediately’ for that day. Fingers crossed for a more permanent option in future updates!

Rate Your Snaps

For users seeking to categorize their photos more granularly than just marking them as favorites, a long press on any photo allows you to set a rating from one to five stars. This functionality is a valuable addition, although currently available only on iPhone.

Add Keywords to Photos

When viewing the info pane of an image, you have the option to ‘Add Keywords’ to facilitate easier searching later on. While it is not yet possible to apply keywords to multiple images at once, existing keywords will quickly be suggested as you type.

View a Selection

On your iPhone or iPad, when you’re in your Library or a collection view, simply tap Select, choose several photos, and then hit ‘Show Selected’. This will present your chosen images in a pop-up window, allowing for easy navigation in Gallery view and the ability to manage selections seamlessly.

Find Identity Documents

To locate photos of essential identity documents like passports or driving licenses, navigate to Collections and choose ‘Identity Documents’ from the Utilities section. This option provides a handy way to keep your important documentation easily accessible and organized.

Upgrade Shared Albums

You can now enhance your shared albums by long-pressing or Control-clicking the album to upgrade. This opens up new options like setting a key photo, defining permissions per user, and determining whether the album is public or temporary. However, be cautious that anyone who is not on the latest Apple operating systems, Android, or Windows must access the updated albums via iCloud.com.
