Honor Unveils Design of the Upcoming Magic 8 Pro Flagship
Honor has officially revealed the design of its next flagship smartphone, the Magic 8 Pro, through exclusive images shared with The Verge. Set to launch in China next month, this device is poised to be among the first to feature Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset.
The Evolution of the Magic Series
The Magic series represents Honor’s flagship lineup, typically debuting in China before making its way to European markets. Previous models in the series have commanded prices exceeding €1,000 (roughly $1,200), emphasizing high-end components like advanced chipsets, sizeable batteries, and superior camera technology. The Magic 8 Pro is expected to uphold this tradition.
Design Familiarities and Innovations
Visually, the Magic 8 Pro resembles its predecessor, the Magic 7 Pro. The new model features a flat back, a departure from the subtle curves of the previous iteration, yet many design elements remain consistent, including a striking light blue color that echoes the hues of last year’s model.
Introducing a Dedicated AI Button
A notable addition is the introduction of an additional button on the side of the device, positioned alongside the fingerprint sensor and volume rocker. Honor specifies that this new button is dedicated to AI functionalities, although the precise features it will unlock remain undisclosed. In conjunction with this, Honor is launching an innovative AI feature named Magic Color, allowing users to reimagine their images and videos using color palettes from their chosen images.
Camera Capabilities
On the rear, the Magic 8 Pro sports a circular camera island that appears to house four lenses. However, it’s likely that this configuration includes three lenses along with a Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor, primarily used for depth detection. Honor’s Chief Marketing Officer, Guo Rui, has teased camera capabilities through a Weibo post that previewed a 200-megapixel camera, featuring an 85mm equivalent f/2.6 lens. This indicates an upgrade over the Magic 7 Pro’s 72mm periscope telephoto lens.
Powering the Magic 8 Pro
Honor has confirmed that the Magic 8 series will be driven by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. Notably, Honor isn’t alone in its use of this powerful chip; Xiaomi has also announced that it will feature in its upcoming Xiaomi 17 series, with further details expected shortly.
What’s Next for Honor?
Last year, Honor introduced the Magic 7 and Magic 7 Pro, later complemented by a Lite version. Anticipation is high as two new phones are expected at the launch event in China on October 15th. Alongside the Magic 8 Pro, the MagicPad 3 Pro will also utilize the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset, with hopes for European availability early next year. Furthermore, there are rumors of new models, including the Magic 8 Ultra and Magic 8 Mini, with a projected release not before 2026.
