The Growing Skepticism Around AI: Why Many Americans Are Souring on New Technology

Even before the latest wave of concerning AI news, many Americans were expressing their discontent with artificial intelligence. This discontent is fueled by big existential concerns, such as the fear of widening inequality, mass job losses, and the ambiguous environmental impacts of sprawling data centers. Yet, it also extends to personal frustrations, like finding oneself forced to use a less efficient version of Google Search.

This sentiment does not imply that AI lacks benefits for certain individuals in specific contexts. However, the untested technology has been imposed on millions, many of whom did not ask for it and genuinely seem to dislike it. A recent survey by Gallup and the Special Competitive Studies Project indicated that over twice as many Americans distrust AI as those who trust it. Furthermore, an increasing number believe that AI will negatively affect productivity and economic growth.

According to a Pew study conducted in 2026, while nearly half of Americans report using chatbots, a majority are also concerned that AI poses significant risks to their personal information. Almost half feel that its impact on society will be detrimental. Rory Mir of the Electronic Frontier Foundation highlighted this growing disillusionment, stating, “It’s being forced on users, there’s no clear way to turn it off, and it feels like this unwelcome addition to their lives.” Mir believes this pattern indicates a lack of respect for the user experience, fueling the pushback against AI.

Understanding the Ubiquity of AI

The AI we see today didn’t emerge overnight. It has transitioned from a specialty for tech experts to an omnipresent aspect of our digital lives. As Arvind Narayanan, a Princeton University computer science professor, notes, “More and more AI use is through its integration into digital products like search, email, camera apps, and social media.” This integration complicates efforts to distance oneself from AI, as opting out often means sacrificing mainstream digital products altogether.

Generative AI and Its Effects

The AI currently influencing your daily activities is primarily generative AI—specifically, large language models (LLMs). Tools like ChatGPT and enhanced Google Search features utilize LLMs to process and generate text based on vast amounts of data. This data is often sourced from openly available content on the web, including Wikipedia articles and YouTube videos. However, the necessity for continuous data updates presents ethical dilemmas, as companies sometimes venturing into users’ profiles to extract data. This is exemplified by Meta’s controversial use of Facebook and Instagram content for AI training, a practice that many users find dehumanizing.

The Algorithmic Landscape

Complementing generative AI are recommendation algorithms that influence purchasing decisions on platforms like Amazon and Netflix. These algorithms shape what we watch, listen to, and even wear, reflecting an unsettling trend where technology makes more decisions for us, distancing us from our autonomy.

Steps to Minimize AI Exposure

If you find yourself wanting less AI in your life, the first thing to recognize is that opting out isn’t always straightforward. Nonetheless, there are practical steps you can take to limit AI’s influence over your day-to-day experience:

  • Avoid Specific AI Tools: If you’re not inclined to use ChatGPT or other AI chatbots, simply don’t. If your workplace requires these tools, focus on areas where you can exercise personal choice.
  • Modify Device Settings: Modern devices like iPhones and Android phones come pre-packaged with AI features. While it can be complex, toggling these settings off is achievable—guides are available to assist you.
  • Web Browser Choices: Switch to privacy-focused browsers like DuckDuckGo. Additionally, implementing certain search tricks, such as adding “-ai” to your Google searches, can help filter unwanted AI outputs.

Reclaiming Your Digital Experience

As we examine the AI-driven landscape in our lives, it’s essential to remember that these technologies are merely tools meant to serve us. Rory Mir articulates this clearly: “AI is just a tool, and it makes sense to want control over your own tools, including the option to not use a tool if it’s not right for you.” While it may feel overwhelming, knowing that there are options empowers you to engage with technology that aligns with your preferences.

Ultimately, this pushback against unwanted AI integrations can lead to healthier tech habits. Instead of reaching for your phone, consider calling a friend, enjoying a book, or taking a stroll outside. Each small act of resistance against AI might help reclaim a sense of connection and humanity in your daily life.
