The Growing Interest in Humanoid Robots Among Chinese Automakers
The hype surrounding humanoid robots is not a recent phenomenon. Pioneers like Tesla CEO Elon Musk with his Optimus robot and Boston Dynamics with their Atlas robot have stirred public interest for years. However, beneath the surface of this buzz lies significant technological progress. Researchers are now discovering that the artificial intelligence techniques driving large language models can enable complex robots to learn and execute an array of tasks effectively.
Investment Surge in the “Embodied AI” Sector
This technological momentum has prompted a fresh wave of companies to explore the potential for profit in humanoid robotics, especially among Chinese automakers. Recently, Xpeng’s robotics unit raised over $900 million, achieving a post-money valuation exceeding $6.3 billion. This round was led by IDG Capital, with notable participations from prominent investors like Gaorong Ventures, Tencent, and Alibaba. This investment is heralded as the largest single-round private financing in China’s “embodied AI” sector, which focuses on AI systems integrated within physical machines.
IPO Preparations and New Innovations
In tandem with investment activity, AiMOGA, the robotics unit of China’s Chery Automobile, has reportedly begun preparations for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Additionally, BYD has unveiled a humanoid robot named Xiao Di, while other automakers, such as Changan, GAC, Li Auto, SAIC, and Seres, are also venturing into humanoid robot development.
Among these efforts, Xpeng is observed to closely mirror Tesla’s strategies, as noted by Michael Dunne, CEO of Dunne Insights, an advisory firm based in San Diego and Singapore. He remarked, “It’s the most focused on autonomy, and it’s the first to commit significantly to humanoid robots.” Dunne emphasized that Xpeng’s founder, He Xiaopeng, an agile tech billionaire, is pivoting toward robotics as he sees dwindling profits in automotive sales.
Xpeng’s Strategic Investments
Xiaopeng and co-president Brian Gu have shown their commitment to this venture by investing approximately $100 million of their own funds in Xpeng’s robotics unit. Their flagship project, Iron, is a humanoid robot designed with a realistic human form, targeting commercial deployment.
Chinese automakers such as Xpeng benefit from a favorable manufacturing landscape, as Dunne states, “They have all the hardware to get the job done.” The critical question remains whether they can match Tesla’s prowess in artificial intelligence.
Competition in the Humanoid Robotics Market
Numerous companies worldwide are also in the race to develop humanoid robots. Firms like Agility Robotics, Apptronik, and Figure are striving toward the common goal of large-scale commercial deployment. Boston Dynamics, now owned by Hyundai, is making strides as well. The company plans to implement its Atlas humanoid robot in its Georgia factory this year, aiming to deploy these robots for tasks such as parts sequencing by 2028. Hyundai has partnered with Google’s AI research lab, DeepMind, to expedite the development of Atlas, along with establishing a Robot Metaplant Application Center in the U.S. for teaching robots intricate movements.
Other automotive industry players are also entering this space. Mobileye recently acquired humanoid robot startup Mentee Robotics for $900 million, while Rivian is exploring robotic development through its Mind Robotics spinout, albeit focusing on a different design philosophy than the humanoid models currently in development.
