At the forefront of a cultural shift, Richie Bell found himself at an East Village bar, grappling with an unusual scenario: surrendering his phone to gain entry. At just 23 years old, Bell, who received his first iPhone in elementary school, decided to embrace this challenge after spotting a TikTok video promoting the queer and phone-free dance party, Who’s Dancing?. Motivated by curiosity, he purchased a ticket and set off alone to explore the experience.

To his surprise, Bell was not required to hand over his device; instead, security simply applied tape over his phone’s cameras. “You can’t scroll Reels because, on iPhones, if they’re taping the front camera, that’s also the speaker area,” he explained to Vox. This innovative solution allowed Bell to engage with others—many of whom were also solo attendees—without the distraction of their screens. Despite vigilant staff monitoring for unauthorized phone use, the atmosphere was refreshingly free of tech.

Bell remarked that this environment fostered richer social interactions compared to other gatherings he’d attended, making it easier to approach strangers and dance without the fear of being filmed and scrutinized. The shared freedom of movement and expression significantly enhanced the overall vibe.

A growing trend across the United States sees clubs, bars, and venues encouraging attendees to either lock away their phones or keep them concealed during events. According to Eventbrite, the demand for phone-free experiences surged by over 500% globally from 2024 to 2025. Renowned musicians like Phoebe Bridgers and Harry Styles, as well as comedians like John Mulaney, have enacted phone bans at performances, while nightlife spots from Los Angeles to Miami are designating camera-free dance areas.

The increasing embrace of screen-free socializing reflects an exhaustion with a hyper-connected lifestyle. A Gallup survey in 2022 found that over half of U.S. adults believe they overuse their smartphones. This excessive reliance has been associated with poor sleep, heightened anxiety, and diminished cognitive performance. The fear of becoming viral stars—often unintentionally—is another concern, particularly among younger generations like Gen Z.

Organizers view these phone-free events as a response to this cultural tech fatigue. By crafting environments devoid of screens, they aim to promote genuine connections and enhance personal privacy—a goal that resonates with many. Even short breaks from technology can dramatically alter the dynamics of social gatherings.

The Evolution of Club Culture

Before conceptualizing Who’s Dancing?, funk and soul artist X&ND noticed that many club-goers were glued to their devices rather than engaging in the critical act of dancing. “People pull out their phone the moment the music starts,” X&ND disclosed to Vox, highlighting a culture of surveillance and exploitation within nightlife spaces. The aim was to create a sanctuary where marginalized communities could freely dance without the fear of public exposure.

Since its inception, Who’s Dancing? has sold out nearly every event, attracting fans eager to reclaim the dance floor. “Influencers can’t post anything, and companies aren’t able to share media. We don’t provide material for that,” X&ND stated, suggesting that these gatherings are a cultural reclamation.

Even though some venues have struggled in recent years—often linked to high costs and diminished foot traffic—the anxiety of being recorded can further deter individuals from engaging in these spaces. Many potential patrons hesitate to enter environments where they could be caught in compromising situations, fueling a broader conversation about privacy.

Like Bell, Jo Vee from Washington, DC, expressed that anonymity was a significant factor in their desire to attend phone-free events. With a long history of smartphone use, Vee felt liberated at a recent dance party free from the pressures of online scrutiny: “Waking up to find you’ve become a meme is terrifying,” they noted, stressing the importance of both enjoyment and privacy in social settings.

Reclaiming Personal Connections

Awareness of the negative impacts of extensive phone usage persists, yet for many, overcoming the digital pull presents a daily challenge. Job demands and social media algorithms keep individuals tethered to their screens, thus impeding authentic connections. Recent research from Georgetown University’s associate professor Kostadin Kushlev reveals that phone interruptions diminish the enjoyment of face-to-face interactions. “People could experience higher happiness levels without their phones,” he explains, emphasizing the benefits of maintaining focus during social gatherings.

Kushlev also found that reducing phone use over a specified period enhances attention and enjoyment levels—indicating that even short tech breaks can be beneficial. In North Carolina, for instance, at Antagonist bar, patrons interact more meaningfully due to enforced phone restrictions, showing that the move towards distraction-free nights is resonating.

Alex Becker, the co-founder of PA Unplugged, is a strong advocate for mindful technology use. The nonprofit aims to host gatherings that prioritize human connections. Their initiative, Screen Free Philly, has already garnered interest, evidenced by large turnouts at events encouraging attendees to participate in activities collectively sans their devices.

While phone-free events are still emerging, Becker attests to a growing thirst for organic connection without tech distractions. She emphasizes that taking a brief step back from devices can allow individuals to truly engage with one another, and suggests various practices for fostering tech-free spaces in social settings.

“People are ready to take their attention back, take their time back, and encourage real-world connection,” Becker concludes.
