In the fast-paced world of retail, where operations run 24/7/365, migrating technology platforms requires meticulous planning. Recently, Sheetz, a popular convenience store chain, leveraged automation and the SvHCI’s VMware VM Import Utility to effectively transition 838 of its stores off VMware. This migration was critical to minimize disruptions during a time-sensitive process, relying heavily on automation to ensure seamless store operations throughout the transition.

The maturity of SvHCI products in relation to their APIs played a significant role; it required only a small amount of extra effort during the migration process. However, the primary challenge was finding the time to manage such a large-scale environment while simultaneously planning, developing, and implementing the transition.

For many organizations, the notion of moving away from VMware can feel daunting. The considerable investment of money, time, and personnel may deter them from making the switch. Some businesses express concerns over finding alternatives that can match the capabilities and compatibility provided by VMware. The thought of either a complete or partial migration appears implausible for those reliant on VMware technologies.

As a result, a significant number of VMware customers are contemplating their options—some are considering a reduction in their VMware usage, but have yet to take actionable steps. A recent report by Gartner suggests that by 2028, an estimated 35 percent of VMware workloads are expected to migrate to other platforms.

StorMagic Targets Larger VMware Customers

StorMagic has become known for servicing small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), yet recent developments reveal its ambition to attract larger enterprises affected by Broadcom’s strategic changes regarding VMware. This focus is particularly relevant for enterprises with numerous SMB-size locations, which often face similar IT challenges.

Scott Mann, StorMagic’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales, explained that even large, distributed enterprises—like Sheetz—experience challenges akin to those encountered by local SMBs. Limited physical space, insufficient power, and scarcity of on-site technical staff are all common issues that hinder operations, making the need for efficient IT solutions paramount.

With Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware, enterprises are feeling the pinch of rising operational costs just to maintain their remote sites. Historically, these organizations may have accepted the so-called “VMware tax” at edge locations simply as part of the norm. However, significant industry shifts have caused them to reconsider this status quo.

Notable companies, including Allstate, T-Mobile, and the UK grocery chain Tesco, have also announced their migrations off VMware, indicating a broader trend among enterprises seeking alternatives.

Broadcom maintains that its adjustments to VMware’s licensing model are consistent with industry standards, framing its acquisition of VMware as a financial success. Nevertheless, as more organizations reassess their commitments to VMware, the landscape of enterprise IT continues to evolve.
