One of the standout features will be the unique handle for each community, which will serve as a URL. Users can navigate to this URL to access a custom homepage specifically designed for that community. According to Benzer, developers can also create a fully bespoke experience on these pages. To cater to varying privacy needs, communities will offer three distinct levels: public, invite-only, and private. Each community will also have its dedicated feed, facilitating streamlined communication among members.
Shifting the Landscape of Social Media
This move towards community-driven engagement aligns with the broader trends in social media. COO Rose Wang recently noted that Bluesky aims to transition away from the model of a “public square,” inspired in part by platforms like Reddit. The evolution comes as competitors are also exploring similar features; for instance, Meta’s Threads is currently testing a communities function, while X (formerly Twitter) announced the discontinuation of its version earlier this year.
