Welcome to the Era of the Big Three in AI

We’re not talking about rap legends; instead, we’re focusing on the three titans of artificial intelligence: Anthropic, SpaceX, and OpenAI. As these industry leaders gear up for initial public offerings (IPOs), the stakes are high not only for the companies themselves but for investors and the broader tech landscape.

A Pivotal Moment for AI Companies

Elon Musk’s SpaceX recently acquired xAi and is poised to open up to investors later this month. On the other hand, Anthropic, known for its chatbot Claude, has confidentially filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for an IPO. Reports suggest OpenAI could soon follow, potentially as early as September.(1) With these moves, the cumulative value of these AI IPOs could surpass $3 trillion, making waves in the financial markets.

The Race to Market

However, going public isn’t merely about reaping financial rewards. Liz Lopatto, a senior writer at The Verge, articulates the growing pressure among these companies. “There’s this race that’s been going on between SpaceX, OpenAI, and Anthropic,” she explains. The fear is palpable: if one company goes public first, others may be left scrambling for investors.

Technological Ambitions and Financial Needs

To comprehend why these prominent tech figures are chasing public funding, Today, Explained co-host Sean Rameswaram engaged in a conversation with Lopatto. She sheds light on the intricate dynamics of the IPO process, emphasizing AI’s exorbitant costs. “AI is extremely expensive,” she points out, akin to the early days of ride-sharing services, where users enjoyed premium services for free, only later to face hefty fees.

As AI continues to advance, the need for more capital is pressing. “One way to get the money you need for compute is to go public,” Lopatto suggests, referencing the monumental expenses associated with building data centers and sophisticated AI models.

Who’s Behaving Like Adults in the IPO Game?

Interestingly, Lopatto notes that Anthropic appears more disciplined in its approach compared to its rivals. “Anthropic seems like it’s run by adults by comparison,” she remarks, suggesting that the company is focusing on sustainable growth while avoiding the flashy distractions seen in some competitors’ IPO narratives.

The Marketplace of Shareholder Interests

As these companies prepare for public trading, the question arises: Will they prioritize shareholder profit above all else? This concern is magnified when considering the potential implications of profit-driven motives. “You see user engagement metrics being prioritized,” Lapotto warns, echoing past concerns about social media platforms prioritizing growth over safety.

Ultimately, the quest for financial backing might shape ethical considerations surrounding AI development, potentially exacerbating existing challenges. “Going public could make things worse,” Lopatto cautions, highlighting how the pursuit of user metrics can overshadow other necessary safeguards.

Potential Accountability Post-IPO

Interestingly, companies like Anthropic and OpenAI may find their accountability enhanced post-IPO. Shareholder lawsuits could loom large if these companies mislead investors about safety practices. However, exceptions exist, particularly with SpaceX, which has a governance structure that may shield it from shareholder suits.(2)

For Anthropic and OpenAI, the prospect of increased accountability could lead to more conservative development practices in their AI technologies, ensuring a safer, more responsible approach in an otherwise unpredictable industry landscape.

Conclusion: Navigating the Future of AI IPOs

As the landscape shifts and these companies venture into public markets, the implications may be far-reaching. With the looming specter of profit-driven motives haunting these tech giants, the future of AI remains intertwined with ethical considerations and accountability.
