Vertu Unveils the Alphafold: A Luxurious, AI-Powered Smartphone for Executives
Luxury smartphone brand Vertu on Thursday unveiled a foldable phone powered by an AI agent that connects with enterprise software and coordinates workflows. The company is targeting executives who manage business operations and communications on the move.
Introducing the Alphafold
Named the Alphafold, Vertu’s latest offering starts at $6,880 for the calfskin version. The high-end models boast bespoke finishes, including options like alligator leather, 18K gold, and natural diamond accents. This device embodies Vertu’s tradition of crafting phones as luxury status symbols, tailored to affluent customers. The company further revealed that their premium standard model is priced at a staggering $46,800, with additional customization choices available.
A Renaissance in AI Technology
This launch signifies Vertu’s attempt to reinvent itself for the AI era, after facing challenges in a rapidly evolving smartphone market. Based in Hong Kong, Vertu was once celebrated for its luxurious handsets and concierge services. However, as mainstream smartphone manufacturers gained dominance, the brand changed ownership several times. Despite these struggles, Vertu is optimistic that the Alphafold can redefine its identity by merging high-end hardware with sophisticated enterprise-focused AI capabilities.
Powerful AI Capabilities
The Alphafold features the Hermes Agent, which is built on the open-source Hermes project by Nous Research. This AI agent links to enterprise systems like ERP and CRM, allowing for seamless task management including approvals, scheduling, sales tracking, and travel planning. Vertu highlighted that customization would be essential; thus, Phone-to-ERP integrations would vary based on a customer’s existing system, with pricing reflecting these variations.

Focus on Privacy and Security
The Alphafold routes requests through multiple AI models, which include OpenAI’s GPT, Anthropic’s Claude, Google’s Gemini, and selected open-source alternatives. Additionally, it integrates with over 80 applications, facilitating efficient cross-platform workflows. While existing AI features on smartphones mainly cater to consumer needs, Vertu CEO Molly Ma asserts that Alphafold serves a greater purpose by enabling advanced workflows tied to enterprise systems.
To address data privacy concerns that have plagued AI in the past, the Alphafold offers a privacy-focused architecture utilizing a proprietary A5 security chip. This chip secures sensitive data such as authentication keys and biometric credentials, ensuring they are isolated from the main operating system. Vertu guarantees that commercially sensitive data can be processed locally, while prompt data sent to external AI models is redacted or tokenized.
Advanced Specifications
The Alphafold is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 processor and boasts an 8.05-inch foldable display along with a 6.53-inch outer screen. With a robust 6,500mAh battery and satellite communication capabilities, it also features a triple rear camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, ultrawide capabilities, and a 5-megapixel telephoto lens. Vertu has crafted the device’s hinge using premium materials such as metal, titanium, and carbon fiber, claiming it can withstand up to 650,000 folds.
Market Position and Future Outlook
Vertu’s Alphafold continues its journey to become a luxury choice in a market dominated by standard smartphones. Last year, the company had previously launched the Agent Q, highlighting AI-driven automation. However, Ma emphasizes that the Alphafold marks a significant advancement in AI technologies, particularly in memory and automation integration.
While foldable smartphones constitute a niche market—accounting for less than 2% of total smartphone shipments as of 2025, according to IDC—experts believe that this segment could leverage AI workflows due to larger display capabilities. Kiranjeet Kaur, an associate research director at IDC, notes that even though enterprise adoption of AI on smartphones lags behind computers, the Alphafold illustrates a promising step forward for integrating AI in mobile devices.
The first batch of 115 units of Vertu’s Alphafold is scheduled to ship this week to major markets, including the United States.
