If You’ve Been Eyeing the MacBook Air M5, Here’s My Experience
For those who regularly read my articles on TechRadar, you may recall my long-standing consideration to purchase a new MacBook. The reason? I was still relying on a 2017 Intel-based MacBook Pro, which was visibly struggling during demanding tasks. However, the primary motivator was the professional embarrassment of still using outdated hardware when Apple had transitioned to its powerful silicon chipsets.
When the MacBook Air M5 was launched, I felt an immediate inclination to make a purchase. The glowing reviews from both critics and early adopters indicated that this model represented a significant upgrade over my aging machine, promising value for every dollar spent.
Choosing the Specifications
After two weeks of indecision, I finally selected my favorite configuration. Increasing my RAM to 24GB was a no-brainer. While the MacBook Air’s default is 16GB (which is already a double upgrade from my last laptop), I wanted to ensure that I wouldn’t fall behind as software demands increase.
Moreover, I’ve faced issues with SSD space due to the high storage requirements of my music-making tools and audio sample packs. Having to regularly sift through files to free up space has been a burden. Thus, opting for the 1TB storage option instead of the base 512GB model felt logical.
While this configuration isn’t the cheapest, setting me back $1,499 / £1,499 / AU$2,399, it’s still a worthy investment when compared to the power I’m getting, especially moving from an Intel-based system.
Unboxing the MacBook Air M5
I ordered my MacBook Air after months of consideration, and just two days later it arrived—albeit with an amusing note of it being tossed over my neighbor’s hedge.
The unboxing experience was genuinely exhilarating. The sky blue color I opted for is subtle yet striking, adding a touch of flair to a gorgeous piece of tech. Setting it up was incredibly straightforward; I connected both my old and new machines to Wi-Fi, used Migration Assistant, and within 90 minutes, all my apps and files were seamlessly transferred.
First Impressions: Speed and Performance
So how does the MacBook Air M5 compare to my previous Intel-based MacBook Pro? Let’s just say Apple’s silicon is impressively fast. Booting up takes a mere 30 seconds, excluding the time I take to input my password. Everyday applications such as Apple Music and Safari open almost instantaneously, a remarkable improvement over my older model.
The new MacBook Air’s performance shines in productivity applications as well. While my previous device managed reasonably well with tasks like web browsing, Chrome could occasionally cause performance bottlenecks. In stark contrast, my new MacBook Air handles multiple browser windows and tabs without breaking a sweat.
Performance in Creative Applications
While mundane tasks are a breeze, the true strengths of the M5 chip appear when using resource-intensive applications like Photoshop. Not only does the software load much faster—10 seconds compared to my old machine’s minute wait—but the performance while editing high-resolution artwork with numerous layers is impressively smooth.
More importantly, I made the upgrade primarily for enhanced music production capabilities. Before switching to the M5, I frequently experienced CPU spikes to 120% even when mixing down tracks. Now, the new MacBook Air pushes CPU usage around 60% even with numerous MIDI channels and real-time effects running—a significant and welcomed improvement.
The expansion in SSD capacity cannot be overstated. After years of managing storage meticulously, the new 1TB SSD alleviates much of that stress and allows for creative freedom. I can now store all my files without a constant fear of running out of space.
In summary, after less than 24 hours with the MacBook Air M5, I am genuinely impressed with its capabilities. It offers a level of performance and ease of use that has changed how I work for the better. From what I’ve experienced so far, I have absolutely no regrets in making this purchase. If you’re considering a similar upgrade, I recommend taking the plunge!
