Revolutionizing Cycling Safety: The Integrated Airbag Skinsuit
In a groundbreaking advancement for road cycling safety, a new airbag system has been seamlessly integrated into a “race-ready” skinsuit developed by Van Rysel, in collaboration with airbag technology specialist In&motion. This innovative approach marks a significant shift from traditional solutions, which typically involve systems that are bolted on separately. Currently in testing phases with professional riders, this state-of-the-art technology is set for a broader consumer release within the next two years.
The Need for Enhanced Safety
The development of this advanced skinsuit comes in response to the growing speed of the sport, as highlighted by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which issued a call earlier this year for gear that could help protect riders as they push their limits. With increasing speeds, ensuring the safety of cyclists has become paramount.
Key Features of the Airbag Skinsuit
Weighing in at approximately 700 grams (with the airbag components accounting for around 500 grams), this new airbag system is notably lighter when compared to those used in MotoGP racing. Van Rysel claims its airbag can deploy in a mere 60 milliseconds upon impact, utilizing an advanced detection algorithm to sense impending crashes. This rapid deployment aims to minimize injury risks significantly.
Designed with both aerodynamics and comfort in mind, the skinsuit utilizes abrasion-resistant materials that help mitigate the dangers of road rash and superficial injuries. The airbag technology specifically protects vulnerable areas of the upper body that a helmet does not cover, including the core and cervical zones, as well as the spinal line. Future iterations may further enhance the level of protection offered.
A Commitment to Cyclist Safety
Jocelyn Bar, the product manager for Van Rysel, emphasized the human element behind every race, noting, “Behind every race number, there’s a human being and sadly it is still widely accepted that a rider can lose everything in a fraction of a second due to a crash.” With this in mind, Van Rysel envisions the airbag technology representing a modern equivalent to what helmets provided 20 years ago, expanding protection beyond just the head to cover more of the body.
This cutting-edge airbag skinsuit stands as a testament to the cycling community’s ongoing pursuit of safety and innovation, potentially redefining how cyclists protect themselves in the face of danger.
